Accountability is good, actually!
I wished this would be a universal position among Democratsz
Mikie Sherrill told police unions this year that she opposes giving subpoena power to local civilian police oversight boards.

That’s been a big demand of local officials & activists, for years — and more officials were elected on that platform this fall.

Important tensions on policing in Jersey:
New Jersey Cities Are Pressing Resistant State Officials for Civilian Police Oversight - Bolts
Local officials in Newark, Jersey City, and Trenton want civilian agencies that can investigate police and issue subpoenas. But they keep running into the state’s Democratic leaders.

The Conservative Political Project, in order of operations:
- legalize Watergate
- reverse VRA
- reverse CRA
- reverse New Deal
- neuter 19th Amendment
- neuter 17th Amendment
- neuter Reconstruction Amendments
it is incredible that legalizing watergate has been the overriding ideological project of the american right for fifty years

the true believers around nixon genuinely saw him as some kind of embodiment of the people and thought that congressional attempts to corral his authority were illegitimate on that basis. straight line from them to the executive power fetishists on the supreme court.

hey a fun thing is that if congress is delegating authority to an independent agency then by definition that agency is not "unaccountable." it is still accountable to congress. and it is interesting (read: extremely frustrating) to me that these people just write congress out of existence here.
Kavanaugh: Broad delegations to unaccountable agencies are dangerous for individual liberty! We have used the major questions doctrine to prevent agencies from overreaching.

i think an overriding theme of american politics today is that so many elites think politics is gamesmanship; that its intra in-group signaling and posturing without any severe material effects. that there is a hard floor we can't actually sink beneath, that the bottom can't fall out. and buddy
It's neither here nor there, but the kind of shit a pissant like Wurman is peddling is the exact of shit that would get you jumped by a couple of congressmen while you walked back to your bunkhouse on 1850s Washington
the idea that a handful of conservative legal scholars have an understanding that should supersede a settlement affirmed my generations of american is astoundingly arrogant, and the idea that trump — or any president — can unilaterally overturn that settlement is just despotism

You might note conservatives exclusively write these at outlets with large liberal readership. You and I know, say, Douthat is a conservative writing in bad faith, but many Times readers see the masthead and assume he's on the level. Don't print lies in the newspaper
The “Person who wants a political party to lose describes what that political party must do to win” genre of article is just incredibly insulting to everyone’s intelligence yet it will persist until the end of time

Second time in my lifetime a Republican Administration launches an illegal war based on lies.

Second time!
The Trump Administration has made the decision to attack military installations inside Venezuela and the strikes could come at any moment, sources with knowledge of the situation told the Miami Herald, as the U.S. prepares to initiate the next stage of its campaign against the Soles drug cartel.

It’s the information ecosystem, stupid
the democratic party’s basic problem is it has almost no control over how its message reaches the ears of voters, especially outside of presidential election years. but rather than devote serious time, attention and cash to that problem its consultants and pundits want to fight factional battles

Question is: will future Dem presidents have the balls to weaponize DOJ in the same way? I have my doubts, but will hold on to hope
In the long run, Biden keeping that wall between himself and DOJ - leading to the conviction and humiliation of his son - achieved absolutely nothing. The standard is gone. The incentive for future presidents is to punish your enemies and say "your mom, lol" when reporters ask about it.
there are good & worthwhile historical & legal arguments for why the unitary executive is nonsense but to my mind the most straightforward argument is that it makes no logical sense that the president has absolute removal power over the people whose job it is to keep the executive branch accountable

Pritzker: "Stephen Miller is clearly ordering people to break the law. So he should know that yeah, it may be three years from now that he is held accountable, but I think it's important for them to know that whatever they do now, it's not like we're going to forget."
