do they know that "open source" very much includes free to use for any purpose.
If you want to restrict commercial use then it's not open source, you just want to call it that because it's good marketing.

When an open source project needs ongoing work from maintainers (eg review issues, PRs) that needs to be done forever - is it fair to ask for companies making money from this project to pay for this time?
I think it's sensible, reduces noise and appreciates maintainers' time.
