I really dislike it when people frame children’s books & media entirely in terms of how it will affect their development & adult life. I get that it’s important, but a lot of adults could do to remember that kids need to just exist & enjoy stuff in the moment, without any expectations or weight.

Here’s what opponents of this care don’t want you to think too hard about: puberty is not a neutral waiting period. It permanently changes your body. For a trans girl forced to go through testosterone-driven puberty, that means developing a deeper voice, broader shoulders, more pronounced brow and jaw, and facial hair. For a trans boy forced through estrogen-driven puberty, it means breast development, wider hips, and a shorter stature. These changes are, for the most part, irreversible. Trans adults who transition later in life often spend years and thousands of dollars trying to undo what their natural puberty did to their bodies, with limited success. Puberty blockers exist precisely to press pause, to give kids and their families time to figure things out before permanent changes set in. They’ve been used for decades to treat precocious puberty in cisgender children without controversy. But when a trans kid takes the exact same medication for a slightly different reason, suddenly it’s “chemical castration” and politicians want to throw doctors in prison.

A neat goose hybrid posted to ‘What’s this Bird?’ but when you zoom in on the photos the bill details have been too manipulated by AI photo editing to be accurately assessed for which species may be involved. Scroll on… A cool-looking Red-tailed Hawk that someone is wondering which subspecies it might be - right up my alley! But when you zoom in on the photos literally every feather group has been so heavily manipulated and altered by AI editing that it’s impossible to determine subspecies because the photo is essentially fake now; just a mashup of whatever AI thinks parts of a Red-tail should look like. Scroll on… WOW! That’s a remarkable trail cam photo of a Bobcat! It almost looks like a painting!… but the head looks oddly small…. hmmmm. After some prodding the original photo is produced and sure enough it had been so heavily altered by AI ‘post processing’ that the photo posted was essentially a digital mock-up with totally different proportions and fur markings. No longer the photo off the trail cam; it may as well have just been ‘created’ by AI from scratch. This stuff is killing me. My days on social media are becoming very limited. We can’t even trust simple, everyday photos of animals to be real. The wildlife community needs to quit editing with AI, and we need to start calling out photographers that are using it. Our reality is being destroyed all around us.
