85% of wrong political opinions can be avoided simply by asking the question 'and what do you think the *other* person will do then?'
Be the change you want to see in the world (I think more foods should be served in sports direct mugs)

Is welfare spending ''out of control''?

It's estimated to be 10.8 per cent of GDP this financial year.

That's just 0.8 per cent of GDP higher than in 2007-08, and total welfare spending has actually fallen fallen by 1.2 per cent of GDP since 2012-13⤵️ buff.ly/s5mz97u

It's one of those things where I *know* in a few years people will be like "Well, didn't it seem crazy at the time?" and yeah it did but still 90% of people just nodded along with it
It's fucking ridiculous that it's cheaper to get a plane from London to Glasgow than a train.

loads of interesting stuff in here, and some good 'check my own assumptions' work as well
It's Friday afternoon, so who wouldn't want to enter the weekend with one more round of my patented bubble plots of British politics? In this final (one hopes) of my mini-series I look at who the 'odd ones out' of British politics are. Who is 'out of touch' with the rest of the public. Let's see 1/n

“One mile on a bike is a $.42 economic gain to society, one mile driving is a $.20 loss.”

“Which means that Copenhagen, a city of 1.2 million people, saves $357 million a year on health costs because something like 80% of its population commutes by bike.” #CityMakingMath

Some costs aren’t costs.
One mile on a bike is a $.42 economic gain to society, one mile driving is a $.20 loss
Copenhagen, the bicycle-friendliest place on the planet, publishes a biannual Bicycle Account, and buried in its pages is a rather astonishing fact.

This album is more than twenty years old but a lot of the lyrics sound like they could have been written yesterday. Slightly disconcerting to be honest.

'things that only an ex-bbc staffer can do'
The reaction to the Panorama edit has been nothing short of hysterical. Yes the BBC has some impartiality problems. But its biggest isn't the one you think.

New piece from me.

Update: one month later, the penny drops:

"the tyranny of the plurality"
I was gonna post something about 'tyranny of the minority' but that's just 'tyranny', isn't it? Original flavour.

But yeah people arguing for electoral reform (small r) should use Tyranny of the Minority more i think. A good slogan.

Let’s take a look at the whole “there are too many black people on TV” thing, shall we?

After Pochin claimed Black people in TV adverts “made her mad”, all her supporters tried to use 👇🏼 as their excuse for why she was somehow justified in her overt racism.

Spoiler - she isn’t! 🤨

THIS is the inconvenient truth
The most insanely frustrating thing about the #ClimateCrisis is how the breakthrough we so clearly need isn’t technological. It’s just a collective willingness, a determination even, to change in ways that would clearly be SO MUCH BETTER than the clear and obvious consequences of NOT changing.

But is electric or hydrogen flight really that green? 👀
