Opinion: Albertans' well-being shouldn't be left to charities
We do not need to "restore" the role of charity in basic health care and education.

This is hard to believe-Who voted for this?

Albertans are the test animals in a half assed experiment that will destroy all that was great about Alberta. Let's live in the 1830's again

Where did these dimwit people and their supporters come from?

Smith finally said it out loud...

She doesn't believe that government should be providing any services to Albertans, she believes that private companies should be used universally to provide services.

Faith groups should take care of the vulnerable.

One MP switching parties should not be able to decide whether a government gets majority power.

First-past-the-post turns small seat shifts into absolute power, even without majority support.

Proportional representation keeps majority power tied to how people actually voted.

Annoyed at horse trading in Ottawa? Puzzled how could 1-2 MPs transform a govt from shaky to monarch like absolute? You should thank our outdated First Past The Post electoral system where all votes are NOT equal, fringe is amplified and hyper partisanship is rewarded with power. We deserve better.

Make a deal with BYD (or one of its Chinese competitors) and Canadian car manufacturers (buying them out, better use of the pipeline money) to manufacturer EVs in Canada, with technology transfer (from China) as part of the package.
Tariff wars are not what they seem. Western firms know they will lose the world market.
Are playing catchup with Chinese firms. Ford, Tesla, VW etc all licensing superior tech and knowhow of CATL, BYD. Firms are pressuring their respective govts for tech access so that they can learn and compete.

Proportional Representation would improve many things
Transit City. Relief Line. Eglinton West Subway. Scarborough LRT. They were all proposed, then cancelled or rewritten. That is first-past-the-post at work.

With proportional representation long term projects survive elections, and the city would have a much stronger network today.

I think this threads 🧵 perspective is a useful way of thinking about AI, as it stands today, and mentally dealing with its future.

"Pretending AI is just going to vanish one day when people come to their senses or a financial bubble pops is not connected to either the real capabilit ....."
No one asked for AI to appear all of a sudden. As a university professor, I certainly did not ask for the invalidation of essays and other useful teaching tools. I don't even think OpenAI knew the consequences.

But AI is here, and mitigating the bad & gaining from the good is important now.

Israel’s “collective amnesia” is a deliberate effort to erase Gaza’s devastation from public memory—denying atrocities, normalizing those who enabled them, and rushing back to a comforting narrative that makes future violence easier to repeat

Any act of parliament may be overturned for 3 years by the relevant minister. This is worse than Trump's EOs

Any bill, eg. tax, healthcare, or environment (except criminal code) may be overturned by the minister - ignoring parliament completely

Under first-past-the-post, a few ridings can decide everything.

Proportional representation shifts power back to voters across the country and limits the ability of parties to win majorities with shrinking support. It strengthens accountability and reduces regional divisions.

One thing about climate change: it disproves the capitalist ideology that poor people's suffering is their own fault.

Billionaires emit as much in a day as the world's 4 billion poorest emit in a yr, yet those 4 billion humans suffer most from climate impacts.

This is inequality, and it is evil.

People must speak out, even in small ways
People often ask: what can ordinary people do to stop populists like Trump and Smith from running roughshod over democratic norms?

Populists rely on the widespread perception that their actions are supported by "the majority" and "common people."

Anything that punctures that myth helps. +
