the “chilling effect” part is the entire strategy, that’s why they don’t release monthly deportation statistics anymore, I’m fairly confident they’re not even above peak Biden numbers much less Obama numbers - not for lack of willingness, they just can’t execute - so they rely on terrorism
The deeper issue is Miller and maybe Vance want people who are eager to show solidarity with immigrants to fear state violence.

They want us to fear Trump is capable of the worst.

I try to develop a theory of the moment here. 5/5

One of my observations from posting about detention centers is that many county officials are signing contracts with ICE despite public protest from local residents.
'Why aren't they in the streets' is answered almost every day in my small town by people in the streets! Rather than asking 'why aren't they in the streets' it's worth asking 'why isn't your media showing them in the streets' and 'who is served by downplaying resistane in its myriad forms.'
The idea that there are no protests in the US and no one is standing up to Trump is proving incredibly hard to kill over here in Germany. It’s become dogma, utterly detached from empirical reality.

I wonder if the people who keep talking like that understand they’re perpetuating regime propaganda.

Mm-hm. And it’s on Dems to fix that, because electing Republicans has proven repeatedly lethal to people — in Iraq, in countries where USAID worked — who have no way of making the U.S. system deliver more democratic outcomes.
Could Trump ever win a majority of votes in a nation where everyone knows that their vote has an equal probability of deciding the election? The system that was ostensibly designed to prevent tyranny is actually solely responsible for delivering tyranny. Parts of the constitution are very bad!

Weird I guess no one saw that coming.

Rapid response networks have evolved swiftly over the past few months. Besieged by 3000 federal mercenaries, volunteers in the Twin Cities have updated their rapid response model, developing a dynamic and resilient system.

This report explores how you can learn from their model to build your own.

Like, instead of preemptively scolding folks, why not tell them what you’ll be doing to protect them and fight for them?

No ICE agent has been injured or killed and yet you’re already handwringing over the possibility of it.

Meanwhile a nice mom is already dead.

it's very clear that this is a template for how they're going to approach other cities

they do not and will not have enough people to do it everywhere all at once but if you live in a city there's a very good chance that an occupying army will show up at your door in the next few years
I know people on Bsky know this but I hope it filters out: The feds are OCCUPYING the Twin Cities. This is a blockade, a siege. They are shutting down economic and civic activity. They are conducting "papers please" stops. They are criminalizing being a bystander/witness.

You could be next.

Unfortunately, this is the part where I remind people that Black 10th graders get beat up by cops every day.

This is the part where I remind people about modern civil asset forfeiture, where US police steal more value from people (mostly Black) than every form of theft other than wage theft.
It is in no way “law enforcement” to beat up an American 10th grader and steal and sell his possessions.
This is 10th-grader Arnoldo Bazan.

A citizen.

Immigration agents grabbed him and put him in a chokehold.

"We're from the United States bro!' he screamed.

Agents took and sold his phone

And when he finally got home hours later, his shirt was ripped, he neck had angry, red welts, and he sobbed.

The Supreme Court only cleared the way for Kavanaugh Stops four months ago and ICE now openly engages in violent racial profiling, snatching anyone who looks non-white and treating them as presumptively guilty of a crime. Remarkable how quickly our liberties can be crushed when courts go along.
Can confirm I have personally seen three attempts just today of agents in a convoy of ICE vehicles trying to snatch random POCs along Central Ave - and then being chased off by neighbors with whistles. It's blatant racial profiling.

Minneapolis city council member says POC should stay home:
Dear neighbor,

HIGH ALERT‼️ If you are vulnerable to deportation please stay home today. I’m sorry to say this but it’s not safe to be outside. ICE is tearing families apart.

Children of immigrants please keep your family safe.

“If only people had voted for Kamala” is not the lesson here. What this moment shows is the desperate need to insist on different politics. Not a lesser evil but people who will abolish ICE, who won’t fund genocide, who believe in sanctity of human life. Anything short of that assures more death.

I also find this baffling. Does anyone NOT know that better prenatal and maternity care, better health insurance to pay for it, and subsidized childcare would raise birth rates? (We cab debate how much.) Is anyone confused about which party supports these policies?

Yes the cost of raising children is an issue. It is not THE issue. The issue is we have a socio-economic system dependent on birth rates that happen when women are deprived of agency.
