🎵The church bell chimed 'til it rang twenty-nine times
For each man on the Edmund Fitzgerald
The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee
Superior, they said, never gives up her dead
When the gales of November come early🎶
50 years, today, Edmund Fitzgerald.

Because @tkingfisher.com has a new book out, I finally got around to reading "Swordheart ", which led me to "Clockwork Boys", and this ✨absolutely delightful✨ line:
"Hours passed, like a kidney stone."

When people celebrate the individual genius of folks in science, they should also
mourn the collective loss of genius of folks who were actively discouraged or disadvantaged from a career in science because of the same person(s)

I think this bag is fake.
Hermes's flagship products are handsewn using a saddle stitch. A worker marks the leather using an awl and then threads two needles through from both sides.
This results in a tight stitch with no holes between the stitches. The holes here suggest the bag was machine sewn.

Hey folks, as news of Watson's demise spreads, please don't set aside his weighty legacy of misogyny and racism. He was truly among the worst of us. www.vox.com/2019/1/15/18...
DNA scientist James Watson has a remarkably long history of sexist, racist public comments
“People say it would be terrible if we made all girls pretty,” he said in 2003. “I think it would be great.”

I literally do not know how anyone affords healthcare in the US.
The Canadian system has a lot of problems (most of which could be solved by adequately funding it), but at least I don't have to come up with $25,000 a year for healthcare 😳

And also I just want to register how fucked up it is that we can have a plan where you pay $1800 / month and then that plan pays absolutely bupkis for medical care until you have paid an additional $3400.

🥩🧵!!
I LEARNED THE ANSWER TO THIS
Chris's Steakhouse was a New Orleans landmark
Chris Matulich periodically got bored, sold it, waited for the new owner to fail, and bought it back cheap
The sale conditions: Can't move it, can't change the name
He did this six times
Then he sold it to Ruth Fertel

what did ruth mean when she said her steakhouse was "chris"

In all my years of inhabiting craft spaces, I learned this: when people meet and hands are busy creating, minds are changed.
That is why some of the most radical policies can be traced back through quilts, needle points, and lacemaking.
That tradition is alive & kicking.

Was this the best use of my time today? No. Is it the most amusing way I could have spent the last 90 minutes? Absolutely. Pattern is free here: bit.ly/4nGGCGc

Update: as someone else said, this is astonishingly good and easy. Sorcery, I tell you.
Unexpectedly home for dinner tonight and there isn't a lot in the cupboard. Seems like the right day to try this legendary and slightly incomprehensible recipe. food52.com/recipes/1372...

Bluesky has a pronoun labeler you should really use!
Only those who subscribe to this will see it so you should do that. Don't worry, that's all it does.

Saw a video saying "If your yarns are twisting when you're working stranded colourwork, it's a sure sign you are messing up your colour dominance" GOOD GRIEF NO. It's a sign that you're making your life harder in the way you are handling your yarns, but it's got NOTHING to do with colour dominance.
