"HTML and CSS are totally commoditized, nobody needs to hire someone for that" —guy who is visually indistinguishable from every other guy who is making some kind of Tailwind-ass rent-seeking SaaS that is visually indistinguishable from every other one of those.

I've been using "is this made by a startup that is likely to be acquired?" as a heavily weighted negative input to technology decision making for several years, and it's led to me avoiding entirely at least a handful of what would have been serious migration problems.
Little consultancy thing about risk.

Bun (bun.com) has been acquired by Anthropic. Great, right?

To me, that makes it *extremely* risky, not just because “AI bad” (it is)

The risk is although Anthropic have billions, they’re not even close to being solvent.

What goes when the cards are down?

I made a tiny game for PicoSteveMo with @dicey.bsky.social !

➡️ It's called King Stephen
➡️ You play as King Stephen (King of England 1135-1154)
➡️ It's a Reigns-like decision-making game
➡️ I did the writing + portraits
➡️ Made for a Stephen King game jam
➡️ It's very silly

I see AI slop in anything, I instantly disregard the whole thing. It's like finding a slug in your salad. If you can't write without an LLM, or you can't source art that isn't genAI, you can't be trusted to do anything. Sorry. Absolute deal-breaker.
I don’t know if anyone else notices or cares, but when I see a presentation in which the speaker uses obviously generated-AI images to illustrate their slides, it makes me immediately less confident in whatever other content they’re presenting.

I'm just over halfway through, so it *might* take a terrible turn for the worse, but I suspect it's actually just an incredibly well-made course from front to back. I've been writing CSS for almost as long as CSS has existed, and I'm getting lots of new ideas to incorporate into my own practice.
I'm also contractually obliged to share that my course is part of the @piccalil.li Black Friday deal.

Get mine and get Mindful Design or JavaScript for Everyone with your 50% coupon and again, I'm contractually obliged to let you know I'll love you forever.

ugh "producing solution-shaped objects for problems they didn't (care to) understand" is such a good succinct summary of most of what I've been complaining about in this industry for so long
One of my ongoing frustrations with software engineering as a professional practice is that LLMs were in no way the thing that caused this (though they do exacerbate it). Every company I’ve seen in my career fetishized producing solution-shaped objects for problems they didn’t (care to) understand.
"writing code to solve a problem" used to have "understanding the problem" as a prerequisite. but vibecoding allows solution-shaped objects to be produced without any of the hard-won understanding. beware of solution-shaped objects.

Chipotle is the most relatable fast food restaurant because like 20 years ago a designer fucked up and made the paper bags juuuust a little too small for the burrito bowls, and instead of designing new bags or new bowls they've just been dealing with it.
