my swedish grandfather fled in the 1950s because he was convinced the russians were going to invade through finland. everyone else in his family thought he was nuts (which, maybe)

oddly enough it was the hungarian side that came to import herring (or idk smuggle it or whatever)
Genuinely curious: If your family is American, what brought them here?

Even if you don't have time to read all 83 pages of Judge Reyes's opinion barring the Trump administration from rescinding Temporary Protected Status for 350,000+ Haitians, please at least check out the four-page introduction.

It's a tour de force:

Alt texting will slow this from the original. As will drink...no, I lie, I was drinking the first time, too.

no fan of jeffries, but holy shit is this article misleading. in the press briefing he calls for "a prohibition that DHS cannot *detain* or deport American citizens", and his focus throughout the briefing is on the detainment part
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) on Thursday said House Democrats will demand a ban on the deportation of American citizens as a condition of winning their support for legislation funding the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

People are reading this way wrong. Schumer detached DHS from the other five bills in return for a two week CR on the DHS bill. Now Democrats can make demands on DHS spending without having to shut down agencies covered in the other five bills. They have way more leverage to get real concessions.
People just going out here saying the literal opposite of what happened. Thune caved! Thune did! This is a cave by Thune and Senate Republicans, any possible way you cut it.

@kairyssdal.bsky.social I would love to hear a segment on elementary lunch bartering. It's a fascinating market:
* closed system
* supply is fixed every day, and exogenously determined
* participants are novice, but repeated
* goods depreciate immediately
* no store of value or ability to time shift

Exactly right.

Bovino's leaving? Great, get Noem to resign.

Noem resigns? Great, defund and dismantle ICE.

Go after Stephen Miller too. Bring charges against ICE thugs at the state and local level. Lawsuits. New state laws restricting them.

Every possible angle.
They are wounded and flailing. Press the advantage.

- Organized a city wide general strike
- Maintained nonviolent discipline amidst violence
- Mobilized 10,000s in subzero temps to protest and watch ICE
- Flipped public opinion against ICE

Saying there must be trials isn't just an emotive aspiration.

Congress can:
- Create a new court (complying w/ 6A jury vicinage)
- Give it jurisdiction over defined category of crimes
- Also create dedicated prosecutors for the same
- Strip SCOTUS of appellate jurisdiction

It can be done.

I know it’s cliche but it’s literally true: we are the politicians’ bosses. We can fire them and we can tell them what conditions we require for them to keep their jobs. It has ever been thus. Make them understand we’re not asking, we’re telling.
Citizens are in the driver's seat now imho. It's cool if some politicians are quicker on the uptake than others but they are following us now, I'm not waiting for them anymore

This reminds me of one of my favorite stories. During a Javelin Thrust in Yuma one year, we brought two Navajo Code Talkers out to talk to the comm Marines about doing the job in WW2, get a brief on modern comm gear, and so we could ensure we still had Marines who could say they shook their hands.
I really dislike this leftie tendency to use all of the horrible crimes this country has committed as proof that the country is irredeemable, when the people who fought against it often did so *as Americans* because it implies they were a bunch of stupid fucking rubes
