“Stasis” is a portrait painted by the artist Zara Alfonso, and is the first piece in her series about invisible illness. A portrait painting of a girl with skin so pale she’s almost translucent, her lips are tinged blue and she gazes upward through seemingly unseeing eyes. Pale moths and winged insects cover the expanse of her face and body, blending into her skin in places.

I also added more songs to the novel’s playlist last night, and this morning I rearranged some of them. Now I know which poor little song is bearing the weight of the most heart-wrenching moment in the story.

It’s a song about California, somehow. No one in the book has ever heard of California. 😂

I wasn’t supposed to be doing this today, but I sat down for a “5min note-taking” and ended up w/ full outline! 🥹

A five-act structure! Looks like a healthy shape: rising conflicts, a busy climactic middle, a tapering off to the end. Holes to fill, but I have the subplots & major turning points.
An iPad with tiny scribblings. Five columns of scribbles, one for each of the 5 acts. Under each act heading there’s a list of plot points. Most is written in blank ink, some in yellow, some in red, one in soft blue. The middle act has the most plot points.

I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

I know we know this, but authors need to get better at talking about how they actually make their money. Stop pretending it's from the books.

Okay, because I need to try and re-spark some writing community joy after… *gestures at everything* how about a revisit on a way you can absolutely support authors you love for zero dollars: by dropping a low-stress, three-sentence review somewhere.
The Three Sentence Review If it’s stressing you out, and you want to write a review, a helpful review can easily be made with three simple sentences: One: What you can expect from the book (without spoilers). “‘The Unwanted’ is a great young adult story where a young gay teen struggling with a bully learns he’s got bigger problems when his long-lost mother returns, reveals she’s an Amazon, and tells him he’s part of an important prophecy. Two: What was unique/awesome/moving/exciting about the book (again, no spoilers). “Taking Greek mythology and blending it with the real struggles of a gay teen is a delicate balance, and Jeffrey Ricker manages it with aplomb.” Three: Using a better-known author or a genre, which readers do you think would enjoy the book? “Any reader who loved Rick Riordan’s ‘The Lightning Thief’ should grab ‘The Unwanted.’” It doesn’t have to be an essay to be helpful, and you’d be surprised how much even a simple review does help an author.

Also, sales are what breed sales. Buying one copy of a book from an indie store can actually mean that store gets another copy of the book in, and another person learns about it, maybe the staff read it and rec it. Borrowing a book from the library keeps it on the shelf. This is how we stay alive.

I’ve been very demotivated and overwhelmed especially today, but then at around 8 PM I finally got one good idea, and the second that happened I immediately felt my body relax.

It’s wild how much tension my muscles carry when I’m stressed. Is that the real cause of my repetitive strain injuries?

LLMs give people with delusional belief systems a way to organise those beliefs. The model fills in gaps, supplies connective tissue, and wraps the madness in formal language.
It doesn't make the claims more credible to us, it just tidies them up.

This week, I withdrew from a speaking engagement at a public university because they sent me a list of prohibited “words & concepts.” I will not humor this censorship. It does a disservice to the stories I’m discussing & the audience, who deserve unfettered access to information & conversation.
