These declines are MASSIVE.

And the comparative silence in media coverage is absolutely DAMNING.

“Why are ppl always so afraid of crime?”

THIS is why. When crime goes up, media trips over itself to report it.

Falls to pre-war (!!) levels? Just CRICKETS.
I count 10 cities in 2025 that are on track to have the fewest murders since at least 1970. Newark is on pace to have the fewest murders since 1956 (though only have data through Oct this year) and San Francisco is on pace to have the fewest murders since 1942.

Quantic Foundry does legit trustworthy analysis of gamer behaviour, and these survey results are shockingly negative toward genAI, to the point where I’m more hopeful that data driven mobile and AAA backpedals on their uses.

Everyone sat around talking about how these people were incredibly stupid and then they managed to successfully implement large swathes of the plan that they all told us they were going to execute and you really have to wonder who is the stupid in this equation

this is a good reminder of how things that are shitty but have been accepted as normal and inevitable can actually turn out to be abnormal and evitable with some science, time, education and political will

Fucking lol
Free speech in the US never existed
The US TikTok sale has been signed. The company will be controlled by a joint venture including Oracle, Silver Lake, Andreessen Horowitz, Abu Dhabi-based MGX. Adding a UAE company really makes it clear that this was never about national security concerns.

Scoop: TikTok signs deal for sale of U.S. unit after yearslong saga
The deal would end a yearslong saga to force TikTok's Chinese parent ByteDance to sell the company's U.S. operation.

“We hardly slept but we were just so enthusiastic about depriving actors of a meagre living!”
McDonald's has released an AI-generated Christmas ad

The studio behind it says they 'hardly slept' for several weeks while writing AI prompts and refining the shots — 'AI didn't make this film. We did'

Also I want to re-up this part of the essay because I think it's one of the most important points I make. The most popular stat used to argue the "they/them" ad worked? It can't be verified or independently evaluated.
When I was researching this essay I was struck by the fact that a key piece of evidence used to support the idea that the "they/them" ad was decisive is, apparently, unverifiable to the public.

That inconvenience didn't stop a stampede of people waving the 2.7% figure around like a bloody shirt.

jokes aside, Windows, Mac and Linux already have actual memory compression built in. Linux may not have it enabled by default though.
I propose a solution to our ongoing RAM shortage:

The Supreme Court paved the way for a felon to return to the presidency — where, behind the shield of office, that felon has ordered a string of murders.
The boat was split in half. 9 men were dead. 2 more clung to a floating piece of wreckage and tried desperately to flip it over for 41 minutes straight. There was no possible way they were going anywhere.

Then they were killed in cold blood by the U.S. military.

Imagine being this contemptuous of the idea of art.

Like to hold this view you need to be cowardly, intellectually incurious, and dismissive of the idea of art in the abstract.

Or just some asshole desperate for attention posting contrarian bullshit knowing the dunks will raise your profile.
Horses shows "abuse, gory imagery (mutilation, blood), depictions of slavery, physical and psychological torture, domestic abuse, sexual assault, suicide"

It also implies someone is r*ped until they die. It's implied someone comitts necrophillia on the corpse.

Why are we mad about this ban?

In the original Prince of Persia 2, on DOS PC, if you had a joystick attached, the numpad on your keyboard would start letting you teleport around in either small or large jumps.
Even through enemies or walls.
But depending on the direction, not quite fast enough to escape a horizontal blade trap.

Note that I had most of these turned off for months and Firefox has still enabled multiple ai features I had to turn off elsewhere. There’s no one single switch to tell it to fuck off in the future.
So, I'm really kind of fucking annoyed and disappointed with Mozilla enabling AI in Firefox by default and not giving users a simple opt out switch.

I have disabled it in my firefox via 'about:config' , if you want to too, here's how to disable it completely or enable certain bits you find useful
