also comics characters should age normally. this is a generational art form and the characters i grew up with should stay the same age relative to me, stories and personalities maturing as time goes on.

which did the setup a disservice too. like if that's how the story ends then that date night is a poignant romantic moment with subtle foreshadowing.

now it's just "hey did you know that phoenix is powerful? no really, like mega elite super powerful 2000!"

especially because they set it up with her holding back his eyebeams on date night earlier in the same story. they could have avoided the whole shi'ar/moon thing, which always felt like a hat on a hat to me.

ramsey, more than xavier or magneto, could have solved the problems facing mutants.

but that would have eliminated the mutant oppression metaphor at the heart of the x-men.

which they sorta did with krakoa later anyway. and resurrected doug was a big part of that. "ahead of his time" then maybe.

as a kid i was a huge fan of the new mutants, with doug and illyana as my favorites.

and yes, this. illyana's story ended. tragically, but it was a powerful ending and they should have let it stay there. but they undid her death *and* her choice at the end of hellfire. such disrespect.

doug ramsey was always the most powerful mutant, not in terms of combat ability (though he did catch a bullet for rahne sorta successfully), but in his ability to enact major societal change.

marvel was just (correctly) not interested in telling the stories in the 80s his gifts lent themselves to.
