I think the corollary that a lot of people miss about "write what you know" is that *you have the power to know more things.* Research and talking to people are a central part of writing!

This sucks ass to see, lots of folks i know looked up to Zen and to see this unfold in real time sucks. But beyond that, is it really so hard to just say "My bad, i thought it'd look cool but just didn't really consider the implications," like you did not need to out yourself like this
