I posted this on #WorldWildlifeDay 2020, over on the rich man's toy. It's an annotated drone photo of my "wildlife area". I'm fortunate enough to be able to provide some refuge from the thin flailed hedges and agricultural monocultures that are now all too common. I planted all the trees and hedges.

A ferrule is any of a number of types of objects, generally used for fastening, joining, sealing, or reinforcement.

They are often narrow circular rings made from metal, or less commonly, plastic. Ferrules are also often referred to as eyelets or grommets.

Free talk (donations accepted) by the Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland about a fascinating family of plants.

Club mosses date back 360 million years to the carboniferous, when they dominated the earth as tree-like goliaths.
We've had nearly 300 bookings for our talk on the Clubmosses of Britain and Ireland by Fred Rumsey next Tuesday evening (2nd December) and there's still places left!

Book now for free (though donations towards our work are appreciated): share.google/lQL6JQ7E9SEQ...

I was already disappointed when they joined the tired (and disproved) tactic of blaming "bats and newts" for lack of housing and planning delays. But this is a new low.
Rachel Reeves was frustrated that a Sussex development was delayed by “… some snails … a protected species or something, that are microscopic; you can’t even see them…”

The snail in question is one of Britain’s rarest and most endangered freshwater species, the lesser whirlpool ramshorn.
Living alongside nature: humans must get better at it
The first of two articles inspired by COP30 explores some problems and the need to seek inclusive and nature-aligned solutions.

Queen #wasps keep waking up inside the house, due to wildly fluctuating outside temperature. I catch them in jars and transfer them to "the bird food room", which is brick-built and attached to the house (lots of boxes/shelves). Should stay safely cool all winter.

The EPA is starting to allow the use of pesticides containing PFAS on food.

The move is part of an effort to roll back the regulation of what are called "forever chemicals" because they don't break down easily in the environment.

A sad day for climate action. Heathrow’s third runway getting government backing sends the message that airport expansion matters more than safeguarding our future. We need leadership that prioritises people and planet. #Climate

Heathrow's plan for longer third runway chosen by government
Under the selected plan, the runway would be up to 3.5km long and require a new road tunnel under the airport.

Did u know? For the small souls in your garden, the very cold weather can be as dry as very hot weather,so always provide daily fresh water. To slow freezing rates, put balls, sticks & other objects into your ponds/birdbaths etc. It'll leave tiny areas underneath that are ice-free for longer. 🌿🌱🇬🇧🌱🐦‍⬛🌍

Drax collected over 3,000 ancient trees from rainforests in British Columbia, Canada to grind into wood chips for biofuel last year. In spite of violating their agreement with the UK, our government renewed the contract.

Please stand up for old growth forests:

Oh great, yet more good news. They were right about him running the country like a business. You can't maximise profits AND have clean drinking water or biodiversity. I wonder if the people who own those businesses will be drinking the water they discharge into? 🤔
The Trump administration is more interested in protecting polluters and pedophiles than clean water.

Make America Healthy Again? Hardly.

You can tell how bad it is because all the worst polluters in the country put out press releases celebrating.

I have been conflicted for decades between the idea that ignorance of history leaves us vulnerable to repeating it (Trump's USA) and the message of Sting's song "History Will Teach Us Nothing" (eg the Hutus and Tutsis, where the origin of conflict is lost in time). Some gems in these words.

I’ve done SO MANY book festivals and events which have, frankly, been an utter waste of time (no / small fee, low / no book sales) so it was AMAZING to do something where I got paid AND 400 children went home with copies of my book. With proper support, this could be done for more authors.
I‘ve had the incredible pleasure and privilege of doing the Children’s Book Show - the best promotional opportunity I’ve ever had. Organisers were absolutely brilliant and I wish there were more people doing what they do to support authors. Sadly, my illustrator was refused a visa to join the show
