Recent #drone photo of my "wildlife area" coming into its autumn mantle. The hedge I laid in February is visible in the bottom left where the five yellow trees are.

These are the trees I planted around 17 years ago (taken 2019) ...

I posted this on #WorldWildlifeDay 2020, over on the rich man's toy. It's an annotated drone photo of my "wildlife area". I'm fortunate enough to be able to provide some refuge from the thin flailed hedges and agricultural monocultures that are now all too common. I planted all the trees and hedges.

Someone wanted to cut one of mine down as it was "spoiling the view".🤦 To me trees _are_ the view!

Thanks. Once spring comes I leave the window open so they go leave when they feel like it. I have tried releasing them into more open areas with suitable hibernating spots (or placing them by a crevice) but they often fly off to an uncertain fate. You can lead a horse to water ...

Unless you are relying on public chargers for the majority of your journeys it can still be very cost effective, as well as greener than ICE alternatives. But I do know people who have had problems with public chargers being busy or not working.
November 28, 2025 at 9:19 AM
Mine only has a range of around 200 miles but I hardly ever need to charge away from home as I rarely need to go anywhere more than 80 miles away. I haven't had issues with public charging personally and use Octopus Electroverse to charge it straight to my electricity bill.
November 28, 2025 at 9:19 AM
But I get 5.2 miles per kWh, whereas most people get 3-4 miles per kWh, so 20-26.7p per mile. Now add the extra 3p proposed EV duty and it can be more than twice as dear as our diesel estate, even with the petrol/diesel fuel duty.

Thanks for the links, I hadn't seen those. Just for perspective on the costs :-
I pay 7ppu at night, so 1.3p per mile. Day rate would be 5.9p per mile. Public chargers are often 15.4p per mile - so more than our diesel estate at 13.4p.

Isn't that a miscount? Looks like Bach, Bach, Bach, Bach, Bach, Bach, Bach to me.

What me, pedantic? No!

Fair points. Public charging is very dear, which penalises people with no ability to charge at home. Perhaps there needs to be public investment in infrastructure to make it cheaper.
November 27, 2025 at 10:01 AM
Where I am there is zero public transport, so car use almost mandatory.
November 27, 2025 at 9:35 AM
True, though the fuel duty has not increased for a long time in case it causes upset. I'm not against pay per mile as such. It will have to come in for EVs eventually but the timing is poor, as it's bad time to discourage take up. The subsidies for fossil fuels are also far higher.
November 27, 2025 at 9:35 AM
The difference is also only around 10-15%, so full/empty fuel tank, passengers and luggage can make as big a difference. thedriven.io/2024/05/03/a...
Are EVs really much heavier than their ICE equivalents?
One question I have started hearing more often at public talks is "But aren’t EVs so much heavier than internal combustion engine cars, meaning they do more damage to roads?”

That's what I was saying. The move to SUVs is a bigger problem than the weight of EVs. They consume more fuel/electric too. Road damage is almost entirely caused by HGVs, cars of all types just polish the surface, which then needs resurfacing. It's HGVs that cause the major structural damage.

@cathhodsman.bsky.social Do you have any suggestions for best locations to put insects that wake up in the winter?
November 27, 2025 at 9:18 AM
PS: I don't leave them in the jars! Though they are sometimes reluctant to exit.
November 27, 2025 at 9:12 AM
Must be at least five so far, plus any who already picked that spot. Just hope they get on OK when they all wake up!🤞

Not so amusing, but this may be a good example of the importance of education in a functioning democracy.
Perhaps I should ask ChatGPT to alliterate that, to make it more catchy?😉
