Rachel Reeves was frustrated that a Sussex development was delayed by “… some snails … a protected species or something, that are microscopic; you can’t even see them…”

The snail in question is one of Britain’s rarest and most endangered freshwater species, the lesser whirlpool ramshorn.
Living alongside nature: humans must get better at it
The first of two articles inspired by COP30 explores some problems and the need to seek inclusive and nature-aligned solutions.

Free talk (donations accepted) by the Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland about a fascinating family of plants.

Club mosses date back 360 million years to the carboniferous, when they dominated the earth as tree-like goliaths.
We've had nearly 300 bookings for our talk on the Clubmosses of Britain and Ireland by Fred Rumsey next Tuesday evening (2nd December) and there's still places left!

Book now for free (though donations towards our work are appreciated): share.google/lQL6JQ7E9SEQ...

Animals are not objects; they are sentient individuals who think, feel, and experience the world in their own ways. 🐥

Recognising their sentience means treating them not as things to use, but as lives that matter. 🙏

Astonishingly, sea ice still hasn't started to reform over the Barents Sea area yet of the #Arctic. This includes record low conditions around Svalbard as well. It's been a very bad few months across the region.

Scam alert!

This user, Nataliya, poses as the director of an orphanage in Kherson for Ukrainian children.

OK, so far so good.

But then she asks for your help in securing $200 million for which you'd be paid $10 million. 😆

So many existing oil + gas licenses, pipelines, wells are sited in Marine 'Protected' Areas, as shown on our Watershed Pollution Map. The pollution risks + risks to wildlife if existing licences are expanded are likely to be huge:

Queen #wasps keep waking up inside the house, due to wildly fluctuating outside temperature. I catch them in jars and transfer them to "the bird food room", which is brick-built and attached to the house (lots of boxes/shelves). Should stay safely cool all winter.

In today's Budget, the Chancellor spoke about building the economy “brick by brick” but left out the very foundation that underpins it all: nature.

The same Government that promised to restore our natural world appears instead to have wiped it from their agenda.

There were zero plans to invest in our natural capital - despite the fact it would add billions to our economy, create jobs & benefit the whole of society in countless ways.

Ignoring nature is short-sighted.

You cannot build a stable future on a collapsing natural foundation.

That means ambitious, concrete and funded action that urgently puts our precious wildlife and habitats on a clear path to recovery.

It’s time to deliver. ⏰
