given how infrequently I’ve published in recent years, let me be a bit selfish and indulgent as I share “Free Speech and Anti-Democratic Violence” – plus a thread elaborating its arc and aims.

(both the article and the thread are LONG – sorry!!!)

The resurgence of far-right extremist groups—like “sovereign” militias, white supremacists, and avowedly fascist gangs—has exposed the First Amendment’s vulnerabilities to the “leaderless resistance” ...

absolutely not.

and it’d be quite an indictment of this plan *even without* recent disclosures; is there a single person who has said as much, as loudly, for as long as this man without even accidentally stumbling into an original or interesting insight — much less actually push policy *forward*?
NEW: Before the recent Epstein disclosures, Larry Summers was poised to lead the economic policy plank for the Democrats' "Project 2029" effort at the Center for American Progress. He signed off on a housing policy paper CAP was prepping for next week.

my takeaway from this letter is that glenn youngkin, rector sheridan and their flunkies on the board are deeply dishonest people who are engaged, with the trump administration, in a mob-style shakedown against the university of virginia
Former UVA president Jim Ryan, who resigned over the summer due to pressure from the Trump Administration, just shared this 12-page letter with the Faculty Senate, detailing his experience with the Board of Visitors and DOJ.

It's a surreal--and troubling--read.

A lot of people are going to walk away from the Ghislaine Maxwell coverage with the impression that our prison system isn’t punitive enough but I’d say it highlights how most everyone else is treated with *deliberate* cruelty.

as a grad alumnus of that university I cannot begin to tell you how delightedddddd this news makes me — conversations abounded 15 years ago, feeling mostly like an unimaginable pipe dream and they just made it a reality.

🔥
There is no 'congrats' loud or enthusiastic enough for the Penn State grad students, who didn't just win their union today, but did it by an utterly absurd 90 point margin.

I'm so proud and happy for them!!!!!

it's amazing how Bec presents a convincing argument and makes the argument itself funny, y'know, two things the subject of this piece could never accomplish independently, let alone together.
It soothes my bitter heart to know that no matter how much money Elon Musk has, he will never, ever be funny

Malicious compliance is a tragically underused tool of resistance.
If you have tenure at Texas A&M and aren't maliciously emailing the president a dozen times every day to ask if you can say this or you can say that, then what's the point in having tenure?

If you have to get permission to teach in your area of expertise from people who are definitionally not qualified to adjudicate your expertise then you are no longer working at a university.

You’re working at a state propaganda factory.

if I'm reading this correctly, it seems like a state institution is—what's the word? restraining?—whole swaths of speech prior to it being uttered?

is there perhaps a legal term of art for this that might be relevant to such a policy, I can't recall.
“Texas A&M University System regents voted Thursday to limit how instructors may discuss matters like gender identity and race ideology in classrooms, tightening the rules in a conservative state where debates over academic freedom have flared for months.”

the amount of effort to achieve the punctuation/capitalization in this ("sent from [their] iPhone" and all!) shows real commitment to being a hater.

also read the original piece that seems (?) to have set Tim off*; as many said when it first came out, it's great:
