My new book HISTORY FOR BEGINNERS is now available in all bookshops! I'm really proud of it because it's trying to do something different: to show how history is made and why it is a story. It's also an incredibly beautiful book. Paul Boston, the illustrator did a fantastic job.

Calvin & Hobbes is widely regarded as one of the greatest comic strips of all time and I feel like we STILL underrate it.

Old message from my friend Simon: “Promised you a list of names of poisonous British mushrooms. I realise now that it reads like a list of rejected Cocteau Twins song titles.”

History for beginners! "Focusing on whos and hows, rather than straightforward facts and dates, this invaluable guide invites 8 or 9+ readers to consider what history is and how it’s created, weighing evidence and developing habits of critical thinking" Thanks Imogen. I'm so proud of this book!

Great time to remind everyone to check out Arne's PSG art tutorial. It covers a lot of topics quickly and applies to all art, including #gameart. Especially good for #handpainted texturing too!

🔥 This week's Arsenal long-read is up.

Some scattered rants to start. Then, drawing on @carloncarpenter.bsky.social's brilliant research, I talk about Kai's deployment and argue for one way to improve in open play: increased presence, volume of runners, and lower-percentage risk-taking in the box.
What's in the box
Assorted thoughts on the current moment's aggravations, tactics, and lessons. Then: Kai Havertz and one area that can boost open-play chances: more presence, runners, and risk-taking in the box

I feel this is more true every day. It's very cool. You are the stories you tell yourself
Being an artist is so weird cause you can want a thing to exist and then you can make that happen.

Like I am a sorcerer.

One well known challenge in writing RPGs is that the rulebook needs to serve multiple purposes. It needs to convey information about the game fiction/setting, instruct the reader how to play AND serve as a reference for the rules once play begins.

That's a tall order.

Someone once defined “charm” in art as successful ends achieved by seemingly inadequate means.

Here's Alex Toth depicting a rogue pilot's last hurrah as he gives up trying to land his burning biplane, and instead roars into the air, loops, & smashes into the ground.

Designing a big cutaway spread for the moon comic. These are always the best.

I love this spread from History for Beginners. (Available now! A must read for all truth-seekers!) Meaning, message and form marry pleasingly. Like all good ideas, the design came to me, fully-formed, while in the shower.

Had anyone got some suggestions for good comics for a thirteen year old boy? He prefers adventure to drama, I'd say.

Have invented a new low gravity sport. MOONBALL will be the most popular game in the solar system in forty years.

Really excited about the rough design of this picture puzzle. Can't wait to see what the artist does with it.

On the subject of adults reading kids books, Aimed at top of KS2, Goblins Revenge by @andy-p.bsky.social swipes off Tolkien, a downtrodden goblin makes good with evocative imagery, cool escape room picture puzzles, tactical combat, impactful decision making.
