Fox guest on how to save money during the holidays:

"Remember, adults don't need gifts. Focus on the people in your life who are aged 3 to 18. Grandma doesn't need slippers. If they don't live by you, don't get them a gift."

I mean jesus christ, it was not that long ago that "papers please" was damn near universally accepted as a 2-word shorthand for the kind of oppressive society that we beat our chests over being better than
Email just went out on my campus that the Immigration Goons ("federal immigration agents") will be in town (Raleigh).

Inter alia, it says,"International students, faculty and staff should carry evidence of their immigration status with them at all times."

The fuck kind of country are we living in?

I like how these guys get to have it both ways

they get to inflate the bubble via broad product misrepresentation and bogus math

then dole out sage warnings about a looming problem they created as if they played no role in it
Google boss says trillion-dollar AI investment boom has 'elements of irrationality'
In an exclusive BBC interview, Sundar Pichai hailed artificial intelligence as an "extraordinary moment" but said no company would be immune if bubble burst.

oh cool the New York Times is ramping up the war propaganda machine again.
In @nytopinion.nytimes.com

“I’ve been outspoken in calling on the administration to act against Nicolás Maduro’s dictatorship” in Venezuela, Bret Stephens writes. “With war looming, possibly within days, it’s worth making the case again — and thinking through the ways it could go wrong.”

With this news of Larry Summers "stepping back from public engagements" but still teaching, sometimes I think about how with all of the horrific stories of abuse of female students in academia, the only marine biologist I know of who was banned from taking future students is a woman.

This is bullshit.

"absolutely no genAI in games" is the middle ground.

"how many years in jail should Sam Altman get for knowingly stealing all data ever" is the somewhat more extreme stance I personally adopt.
"Surely there's a middle ground here?" The CEO of Helldivers 2 studio Arrowhead says people "jump to extreme takes" when debating generative AI, and that there needs to be more nuance in the discussion.

A lot of education discourse is at root an inability to decide whether the purpose of our education system is to 1) teach material and measure learning 2) reward students who work hard 3) separate the smart kids (destined for smart guy jobs) from the dumb kids (destined to serve the smart guys)

When I was writing my space opera trilogy a few years ago, I decided never to use the word "race" to refer to alien species. I used "species," "peoples," "civilizations," etc.

I've also tried to stop saying "human race" in casual conversation.
