Your 'bonus moment of doom' for today:

"When the planet heats up beyond 1.5 degrees, the impacts don't get just slightly worse. Scientists warn that massive, self-reinforcing changes could be set off, having devastating impacts around the world."

3 massive changes you'll see as the climate careens toward tipping points
Scientists are increasingly concerned that the planet is headed for massive, irreversible changes due to global warming. In some cases, those changes have already begun.

The thing is, National KNOWS there's no future in mining. They KNOW these projects aren't feasible, financially, environmentally or politically. But they need a short-term line-go-up moment to pretend their economic plan isn't a raging dumpster fire
Willis is part of a Govt that is destroying NZ’s core international brand, ripping up our Paris climate commitments, deliberately undermining the climate sections of trade agreements , that has alienated Aus and the Pacific by supporting bottom trawling etc etc www.stuff.co.nz/politics/360...
‘Doolally, economic vandalism’ - Willis blasts Greens’ mining intervention
The Greens’ promise to revoke fast-tracked consents on seven mining projects has prompted government ministers to come out swinging, and one mining company to defend itself.

This explains things like why they were spreading misinformation about Tamatha Paul.

I expect it to backfire on them, especially in Wellington. Green policy is popular here. Setting themselves up in opposition to the Greens for the sake of it will not work in their favour.

Luxon thinks we need a "mature conversation" about selling state assets... But I don't think he really means that, because a mature conversation would look at the history of failure and the shortsighted focus on profit ahead of public interest.

He wants a conversation where we agree with him.

The world’s on track for 2.5–2.9°C

Ardern and Shaw, willfully or no, were taken for a ride by National and Fed Farmers on climate change. Nats/Feds delayed climate action with false promise of seeking 'consensus'. As soon as they had the power they ditched He Waka Eke Noa and 'Zero Carbon Act'. Don't get fooled again.

Everyone expects the Govt to help them if required, but I think the political parties in NZ can be categorized by how their voters want the Govt to help others:
Nat: not unemployed
NZF: not immigrants
ACT: not poor
Labour: everyone but not too much
Green/TPM: everyone

FUCKING CLIMATE CRIMINALS
The Govt quietly announced a loosening of climate rules at 8pm last night:
- Decoupling the ETS from Paris
- Shifting ETS resets to every 2 years
- Delaying the public sector target by 25 years
- Removing CCC advice from *before* emission reductions plans:

Probably worth checking if these people are on the list of political donors in NZ
Iran, Russia and the New Zealand insurer that kept their sanctioned oil flowing
A dark fleet of tankers carried tens of billions of dollars of Iranian and Russian oil to Asia, evading Western sanctions. Reuters found the ships were connected by one thing: a small insurance company in New Zealand, run by a British family.
