I don't know who in Canada needs to hear this, but the greatest threat to you is the alignment of state and corporate interests and not anything foreign.

Oh, so now it’s a crime to bring your whole self to work
So apparently my company can't remove the guy cooking his beets and tuna in the air fryer. People have picked up and moved their desks because of it. One guy said he was at his desk seasoning chicken breasts.

People are livid.

Can you imagine caring about beards this much? Like press release level caring about beards?
Hegseth: "We don't need to be a military of beardos anymore. Do you know how many troops claim to be Nordic Pagan? No, suddenly it's become this real fake religious affiliation inside the Pentagon where troops came to be Nordic Pagan so they can grow a beard and nobody challenges them on it."

I love that we’ve managed to have powerful computers in our pockets while people are turning to, like, poultices and other medieval trickery. Just the dumbest fucking society. Totally bewildering. I personally blame mark zuckerberg.
Under-the-weather TikTokers are slicing raw potatoes and placing them in their — and their children’s — socks before bed. The theory is that the potato draws out toxins.

However, experts warn against relying on folk remedies over medical care.
No, putting a potato in your sock will not cure a cold

One of the things I hate about it is that every time I feel anything, I have to start a little spreadsheet in my mind of which symptoms MIGHT be imaginary. You’re always kind of working backwards.
Health anxiety is hard to deal with in sort of the same way an eating disorder is. You have to confront the source of your fear every waking minute. I have had bouts of terrible hypochondria and more than any other bad brain problem I’ve dealt with I wouldn’t wish it on anyone

Librarians told 404 Media they're being inundated with new pitches for AI library tech and catalogs are being flooded with AI slop books.

But more broadly, AI maximalism across society is supercharging the ideological war on libraries, schools, government workers, and academics.
AI Is Supercharging the War on Libraries, Education, and Human Knowledge
"Fascism and AI, whether or not they have the same goals, they sure are working to accelerate one another."

This is 100% right but also it’s not impossible to have a coworker for whom a piping hot bag of hot dogshit isn’t an improvement on their normal productivity, though.
The reason not to be empathetic toward genAI users is that if your boss and coworker went "hey check this out, it's a hefty bag full of hot dogshit, it's a valueble part of my workflow now" you would not be expected to be empathetic.

People would fully expect you to go "the fuck is wrong with you?"

That the James Baldwin typebot exists only tells me that its creators need to be duct-taped to windmill blades.

If you think James Baldwin would have liked soulless predictive text based on his works, you certainly haven’t read any fucking James Baldwin.
I understand that literature-as-inspiration is lucrative, but a James Baldwin as spirit guru, a Baldwin whose mission is to equally uplift anyone and everyone — a Baldwin who never challenges you — is not really Baldwin at all any more. (And this distortion goes well beyond this one project.)

Steven Pinker should be forced to listen to his own opinions blasted through megaphones directly at his home and workplace 24/7.
The committee hosted Steven Pinker, who said, "Canada has the reputation now of being more woke than the United State... because of some of these EDI programs and policies that are being put in place, researchers do not feel welcome here."

This fantasy is being deployed to create anti-EDI policy.

I’m so fucking tired.
The Canadian Parliamentary Standing Committee on Science and Research is launching a US-style attack on EDI in Tri-Council funding.

As part of this attack, they are demanding disclosure of confidential demographic info + reviewer comments of all Canadian researchers who have applied b/w 2000-2025.

one thing thats kinda crazy to get your head around is not that the musk and thiel masters of the universe are ungrateful for the vast public infrastructure, public funding of research, and robust systems of laws and rules that made their wealth possible. it's that theyre too dumb to understand it

There should be a Hague just for the people who work for ai companies.
Andrew Cuomo’s campaign just posted — and quickly deleted — this AI-generated ad depicting “criminals for Zohran Mamdani.”

Features a Black man in a keffiyeh shoplifting, an abuser, a trespasser, a trafficker, a drug dealer, and a drunk driver all declaring support for Mamdani.

I beg the pundit economy to consider what free speech is supposed to mean and not just this “people get mad when I say it” strawman stuff. Please. You’ve got a president who has said out loud, “so we took away their freedom of speech” wrt flag burning.

Freedom ≠ no consequences.
The definition of “viewpoint diversity” that figures like this promote implies *censorship* (the “must” part): curbing some forms of expression to boost others. It’s an invention of orgs who advocate government censorship of teaching/research + restrictions on protected political speech in colleges.
