What a wonderful story - and a beautiful illustration of the power of the arts.

Great writing expands our imagination. It helps us to see the world in new ways.

And that has consequences that can never be measured by "average starting salaries" or "contribution to GDP".
Great culture can save lives. Literally.

Amazing letter in today’s @thetimes.com about Tom Stoppard

Tbh I thought he’d joined them already
Jonathan Gullis defects to Reform saying his former party has "lost touch with the people it was meant to serve".

He should know. When he was in Government he took a five-figure donation from JCB, then stayed silent when it axed hundreds of his constituents' jobs just two weeks later
Conservatives Promote JCB's 'Revolutionary' Pothole Machine While Taking Millions of Pounds in Donations from the Company
Senior Conservatives have repeatedly promoted a pothole repair machine made by a company which has donated huge sums to the party and its MPs

Not surprising, and not such a big deal.

Now if they were *current* Tory MPs that would be a Thing of Some Importance…
Three Conservative former MPs have defected to Reform, a source in Nigel Farage’s party confirmed today.

The most precious commodity you have is your attention. You don’t have to waste it on poor-faith debates or arguments with strangers if you don’t think they’ll be productive. You can prioritize the things that matter to you and make your life richer.

I just don't need to know what the Telegraph has written about Dungeons & Dragons. It's a newspaper for people who are frightened of samosas.

So the dumb placeholder name will now be replaced by... the dumb placeholder name #headdesk

A simple canvassing scenario will illustrate the sheer idiocy of this:

Reform MP: "So can I count on your support?"
Left-winger: "I'm supporting Your Party"
Reform MP: "Great, good to have you on board!"

Someone on my street has had them up for a fortnight already... 😐
Witnessed a neighbour saying to another neighbour as he walked past him putting up Christmas lights "My! You're keen!". What a polite way of saying "It's November, you twat".

Unpleasant but not so shocking when you consider how UK universities these days are run more like businesses than institutions of research & learning. Management will inevitably focus on protecting the bottom line, principles be damned.
This is the most alarming story I’ve read today. Giving up the fight before it’s started

Giving another spin to Tangram, the new one from Smalltape. Standout track for me is probably "Selene", which starts in achingly beautiful fashion before spinning off into an energetic instrumental section led by acoustic guitar, percussion and a string section.

Radio 6 is a tribute to all that is best at the BBC. It is inform, educate and entertain in musical form: Utter loveliness. And then they periodically allow the news department to mutilate it with these context-free anti-asylum bulletins, reminding you of all that's worst about the BBC.
Radcliffe and Maconie on BBC 6 music is one of my favourite things

Having it interrupted by breathless news bulletin telling me ‘government has banned taxis for asylum seekers’ *really isn’t*

New lines like ‘Home Office spent £1k over weekend on taxis’ would struggle to make a local newspaper
