Russia National Welfare Fund end-September

$158.8 bn (down almost $5 bn), liquid part $50.3 bn (up approx 1.5 bn)

Interesting that they sold about 5 tonnes of gold in September (now 173.1 tonnes). Yes, the price has gone up a lot, so maybe it was the time to realize some of that increase.

Palko was involved in exposing the famous case of “Reino Gikman”, a Soviet ‘illegal’ who had assumed various Finnish identities.

Acc. to Kimmo Rentola, he was able to evade arrest likely due to the treason of Aldrich Ames, the head of the CIA’s Russia department, who likely warned the KGB.

”..trade war is suddenly hotter than it’s been since Mr. Trump’s infamous Liberation Day announcement in April. Mr. Trump retreated from those border taxes after markets staged a meltdown, and investors have thought the worst was over. Maybe not.”

Trade wars are lose-lose, but with the current tariff levels the euro area probably loses LESS than China or the US. Small consolation, yes, but still.

Rather than worrying about the China Shock 2.0 in developed economies, we should be much more worried about the China Shock 1.0 in low- & middle-income countries, Arvind Subramanian says.

Find slides & watch the Global Economic Prospects event here: www.piie.com/events/2025/...
The New China Shock is on Low and Middle Income Countries (LMICs)
High and rising imports of low-skilled products from China
Magnitude and pace of China shock much greater than for rich countries China Shock 2.0 Exaggerated
Implication: now impact for rich countries is mostly from Chinese high skilled esports
Magnitude and pace of China Shock 2.0 significantly smaller than China Shock 1.0
China SHock 2.0 no longer macro-economic but sectoral/technological/security
