Already we see declining lecture attendance, not because students aren't willing, but in many cases they're working. Morning lectures are missed not due to drinking but from working late into the evening.

A similar story could be told in many European cities, and I don't think contests over who has it worse are helpful. The emerging problem is that access to university will be more limited by living costs than fees.

No, and I'm not convinced that it would show much. There are too many confounding effects: landscape history, browsing pressure, management, connectivity etc.

There are two answers. One is that we're working on it! Another is this report which was written in parallel to and independent of our project, and which identifies some of the same knowledge gaps. With that in mind I would treat the outputs as indicative rather than definitive.

None of this is intended to undermine the case for restoring and expanding native woodlands, which remains a priority. Perhaps instead of an uncertain focus on temperate rainforests we should just demand more woods of all types. 8/9

It might mean expanding temperate rainforest in places where it doesn't currently occur. This brings it into conflict with other land uses, some of which are already protected (e.g. peatlands). Is this something local stakeholders would support? 7/9

What we can say is that the areas where temperate rainforest occurs now are at the limits of their environmental tolerance. If we are to restore the biome then we should be thinking about locations based on future climate. 6/9

This is partly a problem of defining what we're looking for. There is no unique set of species or structures that sets temperate rainforest apart from other native woodlands, making them difficult to map on the basis of composition. 5/9

What can we take from this? First, any statements about the past extent of temperate rainforest or how much we should have in the British Isles should be treated with great caution. The truth is we don't really know. 4/9

The one which captures the greatest number of currently recognised temperate woodland sites (75%) only does so by projecting a huge and implausible area. The overlap between the three envelopes covers less than 20% of the known area. 3/9

There are three main climate envelopes used to project temperate rainforest area in the British Isles. None were truly designed for the purpose and they disagree considerably in extent and distribution. 2/9
