Hey there, I'm a designer and illustrator. My wife said about my art: "you draw gnomes as they live in real life, their daily experience(...) Like, yeah that's how a goblin would collect pumpkins."

It's my favorite thing anyone has ever said about my art

Been thinking on the use of GenAi for mood boards. Ethics and legal risks aside, I truly believe using GenAi as references deprives one of many pivotal things.

Here’s a blurb on what I mean:

I’m not sure if Bluesky is It. Maybe just *no* social media is It.
in case anyone was wondering wtf happened to @thelouvreof.bsky.social/Louvre of Bluesky: the creator got doxxed, bsky did nothing, and they decided to go out in a blaze of glory

I know it's difficult to be creative when we're just trying to survive. But it does matter. Whether you make things professionally or as a hobby or even if you make something that you never show to anybody. It's good for the human soul to create.
Also, congratulations everyone who made something this year. A comic, a song, a film, a novel, a painting, a poem, a short story, a sculpture, crochet, embroidery, whatever it is. In this era of slop and theft, if you *make* something you are a shining jewel and I am so grateful for you.

When I’ve written about Elsa chatbots and Marvel actress deepfakes, people always eagerly respond that Disney will surely sue the AI companies. Didn’t happen. Instead, they joined forces with them. You can’t trust corporate America to do what’s right, not even for them, once they smell money

this is the dumbest idea I've ever heard and an absolute disservice to the incredible journalists still at The Washington Post
The Washington Post is launching a personalized AI podcast, saying users will be able to "shape their own briefing, select their topics, set their lengths, pick their hosts and soon even ask questions using our Ask The Post AI technology."

I (sadly) don’t really teach right now but I cannot agree with this more.
Not sure how I’m just seeing this now — a succinct, smart open letter, so far signed by over 1100 professional educators, which articulates the key rationales of those of us who refuse the unsupported-by-facts pressure to adopt GenAI anywhere in the educational process. Read & consider signing.

TIL about a memorial ceremony in Iceland in 2019 to mark the end of a glacier, changing the place name from Okjökull to Ok (jökull = glacier). Uncompromising wording on the bronze plaque:
"This is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it".

I remember having a UBI. It was called “living with my parents,” and I had all my food/shelter needs covered, plus free access to a (shared) TV, music, books, a library card, cars I could borrow and more.

I still worked drudge jobs, because I wanted to buy lots of comics and take girls to movies.
Always grinds my gears when people say "No one would work drudge jobs if there was a UBI"

But even staying completely capitalist, I disagree. If I received a baseline living-wage UBI, and then I was offered REWARDS for drudge jobs, I'd take it! I want to save up for treats and travel and hobbies!

I was worried my kids would rely on AI as a shortcut but they hate it. They use "AI" to mean stupid or cheap ("aimbot" means good). I tried to say AI is helpful for some things and my daughter said "yeah, for making you stupid." This is how they talked about Drake after "Not Like Us" came out

How wonderful to exist alongside Indigenous Peoples! You have always been here, you are still here. Celebrate & support them: their stories, history, community, art, food ✨

While we are on a turkey roll today (okay, you, not me)... don't let the capitalism overlords take the joy of creating stuff on your own with whatever you've got away from you. Don't worry about it sucking; it will. Do it anyway. Again. And again 🎨
I'm old.

If you're not, listen to this.

Get a guitar or some drums, or a trumpet. Pick up a brush, a pencil, some clay or a welder.

Just make shit. It doesn't have to be good (eventually it will be) just make music, art or write or whatever.

It's literally never been more important.

Happy #KidLitArtPostcard to all who celebrate!

My name is Zac and I like making art about all kinds of things with a bend towards spooky and fantasy. I'm looking to work with folks but also looking to just make some new art friends! Critique partners! Mentors! People who want to talk about goblins!

The number of nominally progressive folks using generative AI is frankly embarrassing. Using a tool that is expressly built on stolen labor and which is an environmental travesty immediately undermines any kind of cogent argument being made.
