A Facebook post from a nostalgia bait profile: The Mom & Pop Video Shop "Loyal, lethal... stupid." Koopa's plan was painfully straightforward. He ran a depleted world where the infrastructure was collapsing, the resources were gone, and the only functioning systems were surveillance and propaganda. He treated the public as raw material to be shaped or discarded, using his de-evolved foot soldiers for expansion into a world that still had something left to strip. De-evolution was his solution to dissent. Turn the naysayers into Goombas who couldn't articulate criticism even if they wanted to. The genius of it was that it looked voluntary. What made Koopa's system work was exhaustion more than fear or ideology. The population was too worn down to push back. The fungus choking the walls was actually the old king, devolved into something that could only be perceived as poisonous. That's what happened to opposition in Koopa's world. Intelligence became a liability, so he promoted stupidity. Koopa called himself advanced, but his survival depended on making sure no one else was. The more compliant his subjects became, the more powerful he appeared. Once a system starts decaying from the inside, the population will accept almost anything that promises stability. In 1993, Super Mario Bros. registered as hamfisted satire. Dennis Hopper chewing scenery like a T-Rex in a double-breasted suit, explaining his plan to merge dimensions and drain our world while his own despotic nonsense decayed around him. Continued: We got the joke. We just thought it was too obvious to actually work. The part we missed was the timeline: Koopa didn't need to win overnight, he just needed to normalize the conditions. Make degradation feel inevitable, intelligence seem dangerous, and questioning the system more exhausting than serving it. Keep the screens on, the questions soft, and the past blurry. Wait long enough and people start doing the work themselves, defending the very machinery that's grinding them down, because at least it's familiar. You can't be wrong, because you're on the right side. What's interesting is how much of this was already there in 1993. How a film this messy and misjudged could still land on something so familiar. That exact playbook - feed the fear, dumb it down, call it strength - wasn't just a kid's cautionary tale. It was a blueprint. We knew what we were looking at in 1993. We just thought knowing was enough.
