In the short / medium term, the stock market is NOT the economy but is EVEN LESS the implied estimate of a country's risk premium over time...

The paradox of French power
France has a very weak government with an uncertain future, yet it remains a dominant force in EU policy-making. How does one explain this paradox?

don’t you just love how the proposed cut, <cough> export tax on the Nvidia H200 chips has now increased from the 15% rate proposed a few months ago to 25%?!

Saying Trump is “transactional” is just a gentle way of saying he’s corrupt. Every power he has been trusted with, he treats as a way to extract favors and benefits from anyone he sees as situationally vulnerable.

This is what Hayek was talking about in the road to serfdom, except at least in his version the road was paved with good intention. This is just interventions begetting further interventions.

The US right has moved so far in such a short space of time for no good reason.

On a train to London and so catching up with a whole load of reading I meant to do ages ago: this is excellent and crystallises a whole load of trends I've been thinking about for a while.

Think the UK is less extreme, as always, but that's more that we're lagging the US than escaping it.

The problem is not the pardons themselves as much as the widespread view that justice is for sale… so it is the future crimes and corruption scandals that will inevitably happen at the expense of cheques and balances, rule of law and economic prosperity

Great piece on Microstrategy … it’s hard to look at this chart and not see parallels with another business that almost went bust ( Mexico crisis ), rode a rally in one asset - Mortgage backed securities - and collapsed alongside it 14 years later… Lehman brothers …

This isn’t a big deal currently for Tether: the executive leadership (basically one guy) would prefer they stay private bc they get huge dividends (think billions) yearly.

But it suggests:

1. Tether is far riskier than perceived.

2. They’re making bad investments.

3. They can never go public.
