The main issue with this take is that things were really bad in the 1600s for the groups that would later dominate much of the world and form the US. And then the world had already ended once before for “them”(assuming continuity) in the 1300s. I propose that history is simply bad things happening.

Unfortunately was bound to happen given Syria remains under existential threat by its US backed neighbor and also wants to be integrated into the global economy while the EU drags its feet. Anglo-Western skepticism towards Arab polities not immediately friendly to Israel is a constant problem.

and I think a crucial lesson of the Trump era is that there is great value in people not expressing these things openly! that's a big and decisive change!

Trump's mechanism to pay the troops during the shutdown is by far the most illegal budgetary action he's taken as POTUS, potentially setting the stage to break everything.

It's also needless because Congress would easily pass a troop pay bill if Johnson were willing to gavel in.

The mechanism through which Trump is paying the troops is the most blatant large Antideficiency Act (ADA) violation in US history. It's also clearly willful. No one has been charged under the ADA before, but violations carry a two-year jail term. The statute of limitations is five years.

We’re being dragged back to the early 20th century of pre-democracy US when you could send the national guard to kill striking workers and bomb black neighborhoods and it’s pretty upsetting to have to live through it as it is without everyone with any voice being in denial about it.
