It's unusual for the Wuchang to be portrayed as both female, here the black and white "spectres" pay much fan service, are symmetrical in physique rather than contrasting, but at least they've got their trad mottos on their hats and the conceptual designs are pretty cool. #popculture 2/2

Whilst the action RPG Wuchang: Fallen Feathers has been in controversy in China over its unorthodox rep of the Ming-Qing transitional history, I'm interested in the representation of the Black and White Wuchang, the hunters of stray souls, two of my favourite beings of the Chinese underworld. 1/

The Wedo Bakery offers a "Red Five Loaf" that contains peanuts, dates, goji berries, brown sugar, red bean. Their "Black Five" seems made for goths, black rice, black sesame, black goji berries, black beans, black mulberries. Sure look tasty, I'll give them that. 3/3

It seems to have started with hospitals, such as the one in Tianjin, putting herbs into the cakes sold at their medicinal food shops. This quickly went viral, and now bakeries and patisseries across cities are all doing it. This sign says "cure all your illness in one bread." 2/

Sunday was a bit busy, so I hope this Xueting's Monday #Culture thread makes your day better. Whilst the bakeries in Chinatown are still putting out the usual sweet bakes, people in China are flocking to snap up TCM breads and cakes. These one here are laced with wormwood. #baking 1/

A few people have done cool readings of Sinohagia, if you've got favourite passages and would like to show off your spooky reading with a minute-long video, I'd love to collate them and put them in the run-up to #Halloween! #horror #books #sff

For those looking forward to ep 2 of #rollfornoodles, we filmed a couple of episodes last week, but the hard drive blew up, we're hoping to get the next one out soon! In the meantime, can you think of any Wild Magic you'd like to see on the D12 roll?! #dnd #asian #cooking #noodles #rollforsandwich

#Asian foodies! Noodle nerds! My 1st attempt at #rollfornoodles, where I let the dice decide my dinner. It's only fitting to use my first set of TT dice, with the cute 😸 prints...join me, in a bowl of noodles!

Glad I returned to finish this after starting it a couple of years ago, it was super interesting and filled in the gaps on a period in China I'd experienced first hand (I kinda want to write the sequel). In my pop cultural history of Wuxia, you can expect a similar tone and degree of nuance. #books

Sinophagia by @xuetingni.bsky.social is a anthology there is a fascinating overview at the beginning of Chinese horror, where it currently sits publicly in terms of the government as well, that in itself is almost as good as the stories in it.

This is like a love story between Hawkeye and Flash/Superman/Hulk set in 4th century China. Even a version of Batman ("Lord Bat") gets referenced in the heroine's favourite huaben story scripts. Some parts also reminded me of Storm Riders. 2/2

The background plot is very thin, but character rep, relationships, female rep, action and acting are very strong. If you like characters that act in gender fluid ways, go for this. I also like the xianxia and vampiric elements. 2/

As promised, I said I'd talk more about Shadow Love, which is based on the novel by none other Jiulu Feixiang (whose credit I couldn't see in the usual place in the opening credits, so I wonder how much has been changed). My views are mixed on this. 1/

Whilst I can see why the Barbican are putting this show on for Halloween, but considering its premise, it's odd, because Ghost Month has come and gone. Nevertheless, I'm delighted to see an Underworld inspired by Chinese mythology being brought to London.

Prayers For A Hungry Ghost | Barbican
Shattering, sardonic, funny and tender, this ensemble production combines horror, physical performance, live cinema and Chinese mythology to bring audiences into 'the realm of hungry ghosts'.
