I can understand why someone in the 19th century would want to gamble on odds or play slots. It was probably one of the few ways people could experience math back then. Nowadays people are just inventing numbers all over the place though

I think it is comforting and typical to think, "Generally people are psychologically normal." I mean it's right there in the word normal right?

But in fact many or most people are psychologically FUCKED UP from living in this evil world and habitually see reality as neurotically inverted.

Most profound writing I read in 2026 was "The Emotional Labor Behind AI Intimacy" by a Nairobi man who dreamed of working in air traffic control but instead winds up sexting & chatting w ppl who think they're talking to AI (while AI trains on him). 16 pages & free - READ IT data-workers.org/michael/

the other side of this is that the centralization of agricultural knowledge production in the usda and in universities after the civil war lead to a cultural disconnect between farmers and experts, unlike when knowledge was produced by farmers organizations, fairs, and the agricultural press.
The rapid growth of American turfgrass science basically plays out in this context: political support for agrostological research peaked at a moment when the economic rationale that initially supported that movement was becoming increasingly questionabl.
