The factional grifters will hate this, but the Mamdani-Spanberger-Sherrill axis actually suggests the outlines of a broad, emerging Dem coalition organized around both anti-Trump *and* affordability politics, not a party bitterly divided against itself.
These big wins will embolden Dems to take on Trump's lawbreaking and show there's a price for GOP enabling of him. Folks hate to hear this, but normal patterns are asserting themselves: Liberalism isn't dead, Rs are likely to lose in 2026, and Trump is really unpopular, not a magical exception.

Crazy how much some media has normalized the idea that voters are taking a risk if they elect governors/mayors who will defy Trump. That he’ll threaten their funding, etc.

Try to imagine, say. Greg Abbott being asked if he’s worried that Biden will punish Texas over his lawsuits.

The Trump shit video is basically this, but I will reiterate that if a Dem is critical of conservative voters it’s a generational scandal and when Republican pols literally post themselves shitting on their opposition virtually the entire elite politics and media class treats it as fine and normal

Take note of all these people turning out for protests in small towns in red states.

Remember them the next time you’re inclined to write an area off because “they voted for this.”

As alarmed as people may be, they aren't alarmed enough. Trump just escalated this crisis from a fight between the federal government and a state, to a situation where one state is deploying armed forces to impose its will on another state. www.thebulwark.com/p/emergency-...

And the Constitution is whatever 5 Supreme Court justices say it is (h/t @jvl.bsky.social).
There are a lot of great things about being married to a lawyer/in-house counsel and one of them is that he insisted that I truly understand that the law is whatever the people in power say it is.

He trained as a critical race theorist & this actually one of the legit reasons these people hate CRT
Every Trump speech now produces approximately two dozen 30-second clips peppering the feed that each alone should trigger impeachment or 25th amendment proceedings and are indistinguishable from what your worst uncle would produce if he had any idea how to make ai-generated videos

Everytime I listen to Stephen Miller I think of this one angry nerdy bitter kid I went to high school with who used to have just one line in his AIM profile, the Radiohead lyric:

“When I am king, you will be first against the wall”
The year is 2003.

17-year-old Stephen Miller is sitting in the back of a school bus talking about torture, as in “Torture is a celebration of human life and dignity."

Miller looks directly into the camera and describes the torturing Iraqis in gruesome detail, as his peers laugh uncomfortably.

The president just gathered the highest ranking officers in the military to tell them that he may order them to kill American citizens -- and that they better follow his orders. All in response to a series of crises that have no basis in reality.

I don't know how to yell any louder.

This is a regime at war: With large segments of the population, with pluralistic democracy and American society as it actually exists.

They are not looking to reform or compromise, they desire to destroy, conquer, and dominate.
Trump: "The ones that are run by radical left Democrats -- what they've done to San Francisco, Chicago, New York, Los Angeles. They're very unsafe places & we're gonna straighten them out one by one. This is gonna be a major part for some people in this room. That's a war too. It's war from within"

Pretty close. I think Trump’s rhetoric and the views of many of his followers check the box that a lot of things they want look like traditional fascism. But the analogy also fails in a lot of important areas.
My view is that the country is not yet fascist, but Trump and the devoted MAGA are. How close is that to your view?

Jesus, people. Tom isn't arguing that they aren't fascist assholes, he's telling you that they haven't succeeded in creating a fascist state.

Yet.

So fucking sack up and fight on every front by any means necessary.

Important thread…
Okay. Let me try this another way, and see if that works.

I was a boy with relatives in Greece during the time of the Colonels, a pretty scary military junta. Some would say it was fascist: Militarism, anti-communism, nostalgia, etc.

But no.

I was planning a trip to Disneyland for my 50th birthday. Not anymore!
Heard from a friend at Disney+ that there are multiple levels of freakout internally, both from internal dissatisfaction, concerns about subscription cancelations, and of course the big one: concern about a boycott spilling over into parks and cruises.
