This is a really lovely article. I've been reading Nicole Chung's writing on adoption since The Toast (RIP), and I am grateful for her bringing me along as her understanding of adoption has grown and changed.
If you want to understand open adoption, it makes sense to start with birth parents—yet studies of them are few. 2+ yrs ago, I began talking w/ birth mothers to try to understand what living in an open adoption is like for them, and what rights or options they might have if challenges were to arise.
When Adoption Promises Are Broken
Many birth mothers hope to maintain contact with their child. But their agreements with adoptive parents can be fragile.

I spent yesterday dealing with identity theft. Not looking forward to more days like that.

Having my credit frozen kept things from being much worse.

You should freeze your credit! It’s free, and you can always schedule a thaw if you plan on applying for a loan or a new credit card.

Everyone on Project Runway S21E1 keeps looking at the camera (outside confessionals) and the first challenge was chosen for maximum interpersonal drama. I miss the seasons where the the producers focused more on the process of making the clothes

new project runway sucks. idk if it sucked this bad in the non-Heidi-years bc I haven't really watched them. but having sampled a broad spectrum from season 5 to season 14: the new project runway sucks.

watching season 1 instead.

I (a word nerd) am excited to share this with my dad (a bird nerd)
There's a whole constellation of gr-/kr- roots that mean harsh bird cries (imitative obviously).

They give us, "crow", "raven", "heron", "egret", "crane", etc. (and "cormorant" of course!)

Good for Amy Sherald! But I'm sad for the people who will miss out on her retrospective—I was so moved by it at SFMOMA.

I burned out hard from having the same conversation over and over with retired white women about how (1) Black people aren’t scary, and (2) trans women aren’t trying to take anything away from you.

That conversation is vital when bringing in new folks but I couldn’t smile through it any more
I’ve said this before. Orgs that undergird movements need a new members committee. The people with tender hearts and endless patience can work with the “butwhatabouts” — the neophytes. The hard cores can keep their (useful) callouses.
I’m not an activist, but as someone who reports on people who are, I see some activists sneering at people who are late to a cause they’ve fought hard for. Surely the point of activism is pitching to the centre to make change? Not alienating or mocking those whose minds you surely wanted to change?

A good way to think about the housing crisis is landlords pocketing essentially all the consumer surplus the last 40 years
Between 1980 and 2024 the basket of 50 basic commodities become cheaper and more abundant. To be precise 70 per cent cheaper and 238 per cent more abundant. If we hadn’t messed up housing costs we’d be collectively very well off. Source: buff.ly/U8lZZkc

back in college, my prof mentioned that Japanese Americans were incarcerated right here in the Bay Area, in San Bruno. I was astonished that such dark history could now just be a mall, at risk of being forgotten what happened here

Watching from the Dykes Only zone, it was gratifying to see a) how quickly people nearer to the situation mobilized to ensure the signs weren’t visible b) how almost everyone in the Dykes Only zone went from chill to *also* ready to step in, and c) the main stage telling TERFs to fuck off.
I helped organize the San Francisco Dyke March’s Safety Marshals this year, and we feel strongly that community is what keeps us safe. That proved to be true at the Dyke March yesterday.

so for the last 9 months or so I've been involved with rebooting the SF dyke march. we're a week out and posting one of our core values every day, so that gives me a chance to talk about them—how we got there, what resonates with me. this is the first one on the list.

This guy is such a badass. Also the organizer of the event got punched in the face by a confused attendee while trying to heckle this performer, so: success all around

My wife said, "You should let them know." Absolutely not! Someone might tell them they wrote "polla" where they meant "pollo" but it won't be me.
My favorite local newspaper published a restaurant review that mentions "rotisserie dick" instead of "rotisserie chicken." I hope they never fix it.
