FWIW- this is not just one of those meta convos reporters have among ourselves. Non-journo friends who have watched these videos lately have started asking me wtf is going on with my industry. We are public servants. The public holds us accountable. And courage builds public trust in journalism.
I can’t believe people in the room don’t push back. It doesn’t matter if he’s the president, part of holding him accountable is standing up to his bullying— especially if he’s doing it right in front of your face

“One deputy, Sgt. Ibarra, reportedly taunted the women that the videos would be posted online, but they’d have to blur their genitalia,” Chan wrote in the public defender’s complaint.”
At least 20 women who were held in a SF jail say earlier this year deputies ordered women to strip down in front of each other while the deputies laughed and filmed them.

The sheriff is looking into allegations; lawsuits could follow.

My god this is for real one of the most incredible speeches I’ve ever seen by an elected US politician: ‘And if there is any way to terrify a despot, it is to dismantle the very conditions that allowed him to accumulate power. This not only how we stop Trump, it’s how we stop the next one.’
Mamdani: "We can respond to oligarchy and authoritarianism with the strength it fears, not the appeasement it craves. After all, if anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that gave rise to him."

It’s ok to be inspired—even, or especially, when shit’s this crazy out there. Let me be clear: I’m not obsessed with optimism, nor do I think it always works out.

But we should be wary of those who tell us to rid ourselves of hope.

The opposite of hope for the enslaved is enslavement, after all.
