Same chapter and location as yesterday's Snippet with my characters finding shelter in an abandoned train station....
“Princess Katrina,” Celeste said. “We need to discuss—” “Later.” She pushed aside the Dinah and looked around. The worst of the storm passed. The wind died down, but the air turned frigid. The station at Burnett Pass was not ideal shelter under any circumstances, much less on the heels of a blizzard. Its stone walls didn’t offer much heat against the cold. White flakes trickled from the ceiling like dust. Though most of the windows were boarded up, a draft could be felt from the corridor that led to the outside platform. But it kept out the snow for the most part. It was dry, and the abandoned furnishing would serve as kindling for a fire. If they set up in an enclosed spot, even a small fire would keep them from freezing. For as much distance as she wanted to create between herself and Lake Just, she also knew it was dangerous to drive the horses through the snow and dark.

Another one from the first draft that has survived my many rewrites.
In the winter months, when game was scarce, hunting was mostly a men’s affair. The skittish deer that lived in the woods fled at the slightest sound, spirited away by shadows. A large group of hunters would scare them off, so hunting parties went out in groups of twos or threes. They were rarely successful. The women stayed home to grind grain, our primary sustenance in the winter. But when the frost melted, sex-based divisions thawed as well. Everyone joined in the hunt. The young people gathered at dawn. Bare-chested and smeared with ochre; they carried spears and bows and blades, throwing stones and slings.

Everyone can see what you’re made of.” Wind blows over both of them as Levnys breathes out a startled laugh. Pica swears he sees sparks flicker over Sparax’s armor.

Elruk, much to Al’s surprise, had a good line in healing spells as his secondary weapon. People could do that. Their first choices determined their class, as Al had become a Ranger after choosing his bow, both Elruk and Kriff had become Footpad’s by choosing daggers. Al had chosen, or, rather, Drok had advised him to choose, daggers as his secondary weapon. Apparently, Drok’s secondary weapon was a huge two-handed sword, which was, at a basic level, no different from the axe. Kriff, of course, still hadn’t chosen his secondary weapon.

Rune pulled off his mittens and blew on his hands. Never more than a temporary relief, and in the wind not even that. But in a tent? A moment of pleasure. “Don’t know if I’m a proper guard, but I’ll try. Your majesty knows the one eyed ones?” She looked surprised, as far it was possible to say from a bundle of fur. “Tonttus? Of course, but—“ He wrapped arms around his knees. The little oil lamp glowed in the tent, its precious glass orb round and bulbous. Ruddy on the edges, the intense brightness was staring at him. Would the queen mind him blowing it out?

Willmuh didn’t need this. It wasn’t as though they were holding up the line. Every other entertainer that had found themselves at this, particular, registration post stood as far away from the people behind the table. Especially avoiding the minotaur, who couldn’t speak, because he had a bull’s head and didn’t have the requisite vocal apparatus. Him they really avoided. Partly because his human body looked so chiselled and muscular he could probably kill someone at twenty paces with a single flex of a pectoral, but, mostly Willmuh surmised, because he kept waving a sodding great club, most likely just a tree ripped from the ground, in the air every so often accompanied by a rumbling bellow.

Pica’s muscles burn as he lifts the bag of sand and lowers it again. He repeats the gesture with the other arm: up, down, right hand, left hand, repeat. He throws his mind into the familiar task, sweating in the afternoon sun beaming down on the open deck of Raven’s Flight. Crewmen work around him, ignoring his presence. His daily workouts have become as routine to them as their usual tasks. Some soldiers turn to drink to quiet the screams in their minds. Some gamble and whore until they’re destitute. Others miss the thrill of battle so much they seek it at every opportunity, selling their sword to fill the hole in their heart. Others quietly fade away. Some lucky bastards don’t suffer at all—they return to their families whole and happy, as if they were merely on a grand tour of whatever land they were stationed in.

We were walking back to Castle Octavian. As we passed the halfway mark, in a quiet side street, Fiona clasped my hand. I gasped. She whispered to me, “We are being followed. No. I misspeak. We are being hunted. Look, the streets should not be empty. Do not act alarmed. But be ready to seek cover if I tell you.” So much for romance. I looked around. The streets stood empty. The shops sat closed. Fiona was right, that was weird. It was suspicious, now that I considered it. Even the smell of horse manure was faint here, a near impossibility on a city street. This was the perfect place for an ambush. We walked on until I felt Fiona’s grip tighten. I prepared to run. Fiona made an abrupt stop and dropped her weapons. Then she grabbed my shoulders and pulled me back against her breast. I had a millisecond to realize that due to our height difference, Fiona’s face buried itself nose deep in my bosom. And then that millisecond passed and a thin hairy beast leaped through the space I had occupied. It landed and rolled to a crouch facing us.

I could use a mirror. No sooner does the thought cross their mind than a full-length mirror nearly as tall as them appears against the far wall. The frame is ornate, carved from thick, beautiful wood, and the metal's reflective surface is polished to a perfect sheen. They approach the mirror, frowning, forcing themselves to look at their reflection without letting the disgust overwhelm them. Short and frail. Not strong at all. He rolls and, for the first time, doesn’t care if he wins or not. 4,2,1,1. Not bad. Lucius picks up the bones and rolls. 4,3,2,1. The best score. Davros lost. He lost. Lucius blinks at them, then looks up at him with a smile twitching at his lips. Davros grins back at him as his glyph burns hot against his skin. It pulses once, and then shivering pleasure courses over him. Payment made. He doesn’t care when Krakli shrills and flies down to the table, picking up the copper coins one by one and stacking them next to the gold coin. Instead, he moves to kneel next to Lucius’ chair. The prince stretches out with a grunt of pain, folding his hands over his chest. He closes his eyes as Davros settles into the routine of healing.

Why is that?” “We all know this isn’t about a bounty. You got a score you’re looking to settle. You mean to kill him. So, let’s say you get me up there. What’s stopping me from opening my mouth?” She frowned. “Suppose we get to Bijou,” he continued. “And I start blabbing to anyone and everyone that you’re only using me to get a shot at killing Trayze? Oh, he might not believe me. But you think he’ll take the chance of letting you anywhere near him?” Her eyes burned, and a vein in her temple throbbed. Krutch took a breath and braced himself. He either trumped her, or he just gave her a free pass to cut him to pieces.

“I did.” He nodded in a determined fashion, but what he was fashionably determined about, Willmuh couldn’t fathom. “I changed it so she lived five more years. Of course, no-one knew she’d lived longer, but I did. I got five more, wonderful years with my granny.” Again, the audience made sympathetic ‘aww’ sounds and Willmuh wondered if they’d found a collective spare ‘sym’ from somewhere and just added it to any old word. It wasn’t ‘heart-warming’, as someone in the audience said. Nor was it ‘life-affirming’. It was bollocks and Willmuh could see her chances of moving on to the next round sliding away like a lonely curling stone caught on a lazy incline of ice.

He stumbles through fire and death—scenes of carnage wrought by his hand. Everywhere he turns, there’s more. His hands, burning. His hair, soaked. His heart, heavy. He pushes on, trying to run from the piles of bodies, stacked like wood along a dirt lane. Away from the clouds of crows that call out in the charred air. Away. He can’t get away. “Bathe in moonlight, blessed suroribi.” Music. A voice like delicate porcelain, singing the Soutorian lullaby. It fills his senses like an airy cloud, shimmering, sparkling. Cherry blossoms surround him as branches sprout to shield his view of the bloodshed. “Sing, sweet suroribi. Dance, sweet suroribi.”
