LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT IS NOT ALWAYS ROMANCE

The world may reject for me this, but it's time I'm open about my pain over the word "love" (& even the concept) being taken in so many places to imply romance.

Here is my thoughtful rant, continued below in a page that mentions 1 of my stories.-🧵
(I can't put the bold in alt text, but these are the words on the page in case it's hard to read.) Falling in love is not always romance. Love at first sight is not even always romance. All love starts somewhere. Sight is one of many means through which we perceive another being's presence, its need, its care, perhaps just some connection we cannot name. (This does not mean those who lack sight are incapable of love. The lack of one sense often rather than lessening our perception drives us to be more in tune to other senses, giving us deeper experiences and helping us express ourselves more strongly.) Physically expressed and committed love does NOT have to be romance. I ask, what love is more committed than the love of a parent who will stop at nothing to protect and care for their child? I ask again, what love is expressed more physically than the love between moms and babies? If you have answers to these questions, I must wonder how much you have really lived, how much you have really seen of true love. I am not one to speak many details of my personal life, but I can say with certainty that love can begin at first sight, or at first touch, or at the first sound you hear from another creature, without it being romantic. I have never experienced romantic love, but I have both seen and experienced love just as deep, and just as heartbreaking when it meets a tragic end, at least in this world. So many people, and so many stories, speak of healing/moving on, in a way that I find cheap. Grief fades as the years pass, but the missing hole in the heart is never filled. To truly love is to give a piece of oneself to another creature, and when a beloved leaves this world so does that piece of one's heart. This is not meant to be a judgment, only my take, my experience, which yes could be seen as tragic, but it is more than tragic. Love is worth it, no matter how deeply it breaks us.

Don't remember if I've ever shown these.

But I've been trying to get into the habit of doing speed sketches, because I realized my sketching process was taking me literal hours.

All of these I spent *maybe* 5-15 minutes on each.

It's good practice.

At first the warm water was more pleasant than otherwise, and Lawcket just wanted to fall to sleep. But after what felt like a long the salt-water sogged through the blood-scab and began to sting in the wound. At first the pain wasn't very strong. Lawcket didn't care about it compared with how tired he felt. But it got worse and worse, until it was more than a sting and was deep in his leg, until all he could focus on was keeping an even rhythm to his labored breathing. It was the only way he knew to keep himself from tensing his muscles against the pain, which he knew wouldn't help, and also feared would further worry his parents.

Usually? I'd say their own 2 feet, . . . so walking.

However some of my MC have been on dragons, & Lawcket rides horses as a prisoner (but I'm not sure that counts as "getting around"?🤔)
Tbh, Lawcket doesn't notice how much he gets around on Looccup, but he still uses the feet.

Some of the comments, however, had been written by my mother. My heart did a little dance the first time I recognized her loose, looping cursive. I’d had no idea that I would find her own words here in these pages. It was almost like being able to hear her voice again after all these years. Her comments were different from the ones left by the Librarians. She was always trying to draw the story back to our world—looking for a meaning beyond simple definitions. “The people are unable to see their true reality. Is it the same for us?” She had tried to tell me years ago. We were all wearing green spectacles. We were all looking through lenses that limited our view, blocked out all other colors, all other possibilities. There could be different ways. There could be other worlds. Had my mother finally made it to her own Oz? Why hadn’t she taken me with her?

How to fail bard training.

- Brother’s Keeper, book one of my fantasy WIP about two brothers bound by a misunderstood power.
Chalmalch had not seen his like in at least a century. He was perfect material for the vocation. Perhaps too perfect. He'd reached half-bard, and then abandoned the path, a terrible waste. Moreso, it was blasphemous to be so gifted of Maledin-Iryla and disdain to dedicate that gift to their service. Why? Fear of unworthiness? Arrogance? Or something else? Rushak's mind was not easy to steer along the narrow, convoluted trails of orthodoxy. The majority of Chalmalch's Acolytes followed those trails without doubt. And Rushak—How had he failed to place that ill-fitting name with that unforgettable face? The tortuous questions framed by thin lips, the perilous thoughts nearly voiced, and in the end locked away for another time and place. Brother's Keeper A.C. Turek

#WIPSnips I went with "commit" & still no instances in both books of Lawcket's WIP, so we get a tragic line from my blood-mage WIP.

It was his vulnerability– his humanity that had caused him to commit the wrong which stained his soul with a crime blacker than the hells.

Guardians in human form are taking Helena to a party.
Edgar (who has a strong accent, so his dialog is not an editing mistake) forgets that she cannot walk through walls…
“You play Jutenheim’s Revenge?” She asked, warming to him. “I build a good, big ice castle…” Edgar went on about the popular video game with a childlike glee that seemed a little misplaced on such a hulk of a man. It was hard to tell that he wasn’t just an ordinary college student like any of the others she’d met on campus. He was still telling her about his pretend castle when the twins walked straight into the wall of the chapel, disappearing directly into their unicorn avatars. Helena halted as Edgar, mid-sentence, also disappeared through the closed side door between them. The evening had gotten cool, and while she was glad to have her shoes on at least this time, she hadn’t brought her cloak. She tugged the door handle. Locked. She stood on the low stone step, staring blankly at the door for a moment, wondering if she should turn back. Was this a practical joke? An outsized wave of horror crashed into her, thinking of how they’d left her behind. It had happened so abruptly and caught her so off-guard, that the sting of tears rushed to the backs of her eyes and she caught her breath. She blinked them back with a hard inhale that was almost a growl and looked around at the quiet campus with its abundance of streetlights, feeling weak, shaky, and alone. The mist of rain had started to turn into real raindrops, causing her to shiver. The door rattled and one of the twins stood there, wearing the same half eye-roll expression he’d shot his brother a moment ago, and gestured her in. “Sorry,” Edgar said sheepishly from the hall, but in good humor. Relieved, she entered and stayed close to the guardians through the darkened halls, all moving

I went with “work.”

A rare clip of my only real Mudlarks draft. Yesterday, Charlie had been complaining to Jack that her crush had ghosted her.

Today, she’s feeling cheeky about the case and wants to rent a rowboat to take a better look at evidence.
"Where are you going?" He asked dryly. "On a romantic river cruise. You coming?" He didnt have a chance to answer before her phone buzzed in her pocket. She dug it out and checked the number, a furrow on her brow. "What is it?" He asked, concerned. She stared dumbly at her phone for a few moments and he chanced a guess. "Your mystery woman?" "Uh... Could be." Charlie lost her playful confidence, appearing suddenly quite self-concious. She quickly answered the call before the buzzing stopped. Jack stepped back to give her some privacy, but he couldnt help but smile after her. "Hello... No, no, of course, anytime... This weekend? I... I mean I would love to, that sounds wonderful, but my work sometimes is..." She looked up at Jack hopefully. He nodded with an amiable shrug. "Tell you what, lets plan on it and if I cant make it, Ill call you early and make it up to you another day. Thats not too terribly flakey of me, is it? Its just my schedule can be unpredictable... Is this a number I can reach you... I see... I guess thats fair. Saturday then, same place? Brilliant. Ta." She clicked the phone off and let out a breath, then looked up at Jack again with a bemused look. "Saturday," She announced, declairing the obvious. "Saturday," Jack agreed with a certain level of pleasure. They looked at each other with a sense of mutual triumph for a moment. "Shall we head out then?" Jack concluded. "Absolutely."

There is memory of death in mine, but no gore.
“Did you rescue everybody?” Lelliddy who was still with him asked. Lawcket thought about how to answer that question. He had done nothing for the king's soldiers, and three of them were dead or dying in the house. He didn't know if any of those were still alive. His heart clenched at the thought of going back into that house. Somehow all the horrors he'd seen and the places he'd been had only made him weaker, and a part of him knew better than to fight through his weakness. It was part of who he was, part of how he cared and related to the needs of others.

Lawcket is used to plain colored clothing. His family was never wealthy enough for dye.

Rider wears brown leathers, & never plans to wear anything else. White underclothes are fine, but it would take a lot to get him into anything colorful.

Imo, a good cliffhanger is one that's meaningful even if it's how the story ends.

I struggle to know what counts as a cliffhanger, though, so I'm afraid to give examples.

I *don't* like cliffhangers as cliffhangers, & *hate* when it looks like a character is going to betray - 1/?

Rider never travels without most of his belonging, his cloak, his bow, his skinning knife, his water bottles, several bags/pouches containing various other items he needs for survival.

Why? because he depends on those things to keep himself, & anyone he chooses to help, alive.

Lawcket doesn't have anything.
He used to usually take the axe his Dad gifted him, with him whenever he went far from home. But for that very reason it's lost. He also did not keep it *always* with him.

Drisal felt his face shriveling. The frigid airstream numbed his head. Night ran past without a stop; dawn was colder. The heat of his life trailed away behind him. But Shalhra, his faithful bolt of argent fire, reckoned neither cold nor miles. Rethen! Drisal cried, over and again. He could slow time. He could! He laughed, feeling Shahra's power flowing up through his thighs, denying his own exhaustion. Not steepness of mountain, sharpness of hail nor thickness of forest would HINDER his frantic chase. His love could not be scorned. Strange cries and drumbeats impinged from all directions. Trees flowed past like skeletal ghosts. He clenched his teeth until his jaw ached. Waiting in front of these doors was a middle-aged man with a jutting paunch, smug smile, and a thin combover. He wore an official-looking jacket, bright red with a white sash pinned from shoulder to hip. As the group neared, he raised his hand, bringing them to a halt. “Welcome to the Golden Palace,” he said to the Katorgans in a high voice that grated on Daemrin’s ears. He spoke Imperial slowly, over-enunciating his words. “I’m Senan Wellay, Minister of Foreign Affairs. As you are foreign, I’m happy to assist in your… business transaction with the king.” “Where is he?” Daemrin asked. Wellay’s smile grew tight. “Just inside the Great Hall here. He’s in the middle of holding court, and we shouldn’t interrupt him.” “Sounds like the perfect time to interrupt him, actually.” Daemrin moved to shove past, but the guards flanking Wellay crossed their pikes in front of him, blocking Daemrin’s path. “I’m afraid you’re not permitted inside,” said the minister from behind the barrier. “Hand over Gillain to me, and I’ll wire your money to your account of choice.” Daemrin turned his head so the full visage of his helmet’s front bore down upon the smaller man. “I don’t think so. We went through this same bullshit back at the spaceport and I’m not about to go over it again. Let us through.”
