a bold and risky vision for the university of the 21st century
Ready to start a movement that argues universities should spend money on their core functions, rather than flashy nonsense. Such as teaching and research for example.

I don't think we should ever fear engagement over our basic principles of what is right. Jus soli is a very basic principle of human freedom and deeply woven into the structure of the common law and we should love to love and defend and promote it.

I don’t know what anyone can do about it, especially, but it does feel like even engaging in a conversation about birthright citizenship is a win for the baddies

Meanwhile some of the most interesting organic radical action on the ground is coming from rural communities protesting data centers. Somehow that doesn’t excite a lot of people who preach about radial action.

Real question, is there a common non-jargon word for cathexis?
I mean the second thing was probably a reaction to the first because people naturally if unhelpfully, identify with the thing they like and dislike it when that thing is criticized much like they themselves dislike being criticized.
Not to be all "Get off my lawn" but what happened to fans who delighted in taking apart the thing they love to understand how it works and making fun of it affectionately? When did liking a thing become being a volunteer paramilitary wing of a franchise's marketting department?

I call this the Dream Vampire Economic Model. It also exists in the arts, publishing, and every other somewhat prestigious industry that young people want to work in.
there's a parallel between nonprofit world and academia, where there's a constant tide of idealistic, hopeful people coming in the door, and the people on top are able to lever that commitment to The Cause to extract from them in a way that's harder when everyone's just there to make a buck

This is an underrated interesting thing about Stranger Things doubling down on children’s agency in the season they’re releasing Right Now. Stuff that maybe just seemed nice or sentimental in pre-Trump 2016 hits different now.
One reason that the US (and the UK presumably, I don’t even go there) doesn’t teach children universal critical thinking and critical information literacy skills is that the idea that children should be able to evaluate or dissent from the lies of adults in society is politically contested.
Finland has emerged as a global leader in countering “fake news”. Here's how they've done it

starting point for future budgets for things that are good, "idk, how about triple it" bsky.app/profile/cost...
The entire R&D budget of the department of energy for renewable energy and energy efficiency is, or was, $3.5B. For the whole country! We should triple that number instead. bsky.app/profile/cost...
SpaceX gets a $5.9B contract.

All the renewable energy & energy efficiency R&D done by the Department of Energy is only $3.5B. Wind, solar, geothermal, electric vehicles, fuel cell vehicles, biofuels, weatherization, buildings, efficiency, state programs, manufacturing, everything. Total: $3.5B 🔌💡
