I know it is beside the point because this administration simply wants resegregation but conferences for Black professional associations have always been open to everyone. Typically, the started as a response to white exclusion, and did not replicate that.

Very bad: OSU unilaterally cancelled the registration of grad students attending the joint conference of the National Society of Black Physicists and the National Society of Hispanic Physicists. And OSU won't fund recruiting at the Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science.
Ohio State changes policy on group conferences after Trump administration threats
A federal investigation into potentially discriminatory practices at Ohio State prompted the university to change its policies regarding conferences.

This year I wrote a book about how Columbus colonized the Caribbean in 1492 - not what is now the US mainland.

My book DARK LABORATORY celebrates Kalinago survivance and the African agrarian x aquatic traditions people like my ancestors, who were enslaved, brought to the region.

The Common Core failed, secondary & higher-ed embraced its own demise, and proponents of “classical” (read, “conservative”) education are ready with their own ideas of what learning. Anne E. Clarks asks: What, now, is to be done?
Toward the Higher- and Secondary-Ed Alliance! - Public Books
The influence of K-12 policy and pedagogy on higher ed can perhaps be seen best in the trickle-up effect of the standards of the Common Core.

Maybe a silly question but when did "project" become the normative term for describing a (baggy?) sociohistorical process initiated and advanced by distinct actors with distinct goals (ie national project, racial project, settler colonial project, and so on)?

Yesterday we received word that the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS) within Dept of Ed (DoEd) was gutted--right now we believe there is no one or nearly no one left. But what does it mean? 1/11

It's obvious but unsaid that the first 9 schools chosen for the Compact for "Academic Excellence" in Higher Ed were selected so that the federal government can watch how this faustian proposal will play out in different scenarios: public, private, ivy, red/blue state, various endowment sizes.

Measles definitely caused immune amnesia, wiping out any immunity you may have developed to any other virus.
kehf.bsky.social
Measles is also thought to be an immune system eraser, so getting sick with measles can leave a person vulnerable to all the diseases they had immunity from before getting sick & are at higher risk of death even if they survive the measles. So mask up & check your vaccination status.

Outbreaks in South Carolina and Minneapolis. please get vaccinated. if you were vaccinated as a kid, get your titers done to make sure you're still immune.

apparently the new Netflix show Monster: The Ed Gein Story invented an "autogynephilia" backstory for their serial killer (because of course they did!). so time to re-up my collection of writings on this pseudoscientific zombie theory...

I am writing this because it has swiftly become crystal clear to me that many people have no idea what is happening or how this works. Here is a thread for non-academics to put into context what just happened to Dr. Mark Bray, a fellow historian.

There are no safeguards against pseudoscience. AI is not capable of detecting emotions, therefore this BS should just be banned.

The increasing use of AI to surveil people’s emotions endangers not only privacy but also personal autonomy—the bedrock of democracy, writes Oznur Uguz. Newly emerging AI laws fail to provide adequate safeguards, she says.

One of the under-observed parts of the last several years is the switch where wealthy donors claims directive authority over university policy. So they think Trump’s efforts of undermine academic freedom promote their own control. It’s a symptom of oligarchy, and how oligarchy gives way to Tyranny.

The Times' coverage of Rowan's role has been remarkable. It is sad to me that after forcing his alma mater, Penn, to oust a really good president for incredibly poor reasons, Rowan's megalomanical next thought was "maybe the federal government should do this everywhere" and they're actually trying.

Some good news: Most people don't trust Trump and RFK Jr.'s claims about autism.
Just four percent of respondents told a KFF poll they believed the claim was definitely true, while 30 percent said it was probably false and 35 percent said it was definitely false

I cannot emphasize enough how dangerous it is to dismantle our disease surveillance infrastructure.
