The incredible, indomitable, inspirational Alice Wong has left us.

I'm so grateful to have known her on social media, and so grateful for all the words she shared with us and all the actions she encouraged us into making.

May we live up to her example.

I am eternally grateful for reading the book Cool Math (by Maganzini) when I was 8. Before it, I did not know that math was interesting. Now I am a mathematician.
performative reading, lack of reading skills, nobody's reading anymore -- NO!

tell me about a book that changed you

for me? the *extremely* ahistorical novel, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY which I read at 13 and was like, "Oh, art can be *everything* to a maker, for good and bad"

As someone with ME/CFS my entire life is "rational assessment of the threat environment," because I walk a daily tightrope of illness management.

I don't have the luxury of ignoring the science, which overwhelmingly proves the threat of covid is still very real.

That's not fear, it's fact.
(and i think it is a demand that stems from fear more than a rational assessment of the threat environment)

Nooooo. @jamellebouie.net really understands eugenics and public health in this moment, with the exception of covid and masking. Soooo close to getting it, so disappointing
yeah, i think a commitment to public health obligates you to get vaccinated and, when you are sick, do what you can to avoid spreading that to other people. the demand that one mask at all times in public spaces is, i think, unreasonable.

This piece is just an essential, important and excellent intervention as Coates' Vanity Fair essay was. One NYT column isn't that important, but an accommodationist mindset has spread in center-left elite circles. And it should be rejected forcefully. democracyamericana.com/posts/c5d024...

TODAY'S THE DAY! It's one of the coolest dates of our lifetime.

Whether you go by month/day/year or day/month/year, if we write the date as one number, we will get a square number! Both sides can agree that today's date is a square date.

I say this every time something of note happens in DC and inevitably someone gets mad at me:

It’s not just “where the government is.” It’s a real place with real people living in it. Reducing it to some playground of the elite and powerful is inaccurate and often racist
the dc metro area has a heart and a soul and it beats like so many others but the rest of this country treats us like our lives are just some background character for the Real Actors that are Politicians for some reason.

tell that to the families living in wheaton when this comes to them.

💯
the dc metro area isn’t just a place where i work. i was born in the beltway. grew up here. and it was never monuments or museums to me. it was the world-class public school system, one of the nation’s most diverse, and was the arts, and live music and the afi silver, and so, so many restaurants.

On Severe ME Day, my hope is for recognition that this is a humanitarian crisis on a massive scale.

I hope everyone aware that this is happening will commit to demanding a commensurate response from government, industry and charitable giving.
