“People just assume these numbers are right because they’re in the zoning code,” said Tony Jordan, who runs the Parking Reform Network, which advocates ending minimums. “No, they’re just made up.”

Where’s the push for putting a bike share e-bike within 5 minutes of every person in urban America?

American cities have stagnated. Residential neighborhoods, transportation systems, and commercial districts have changed little in 50+ years.

My new book, "The Unfinished Metropolis," explores how that happened — and how to fix it.

I know that you can take bikes on board. I don’t usually want to do that. Bike racks at a “BRT” station should be a basic amenity.
tonyjordan.bsky.social
Why doesn’t @trimet.bsky.social FX have any bike racks at their stops? We spent so much money and ignored basic multimodal infrastructure.
A picture of a Portland FX BRT stop. There are trash cans, covered seating, and signage. There are no bike racks.

There’s no such thing as a good parking space.

Trader Joe's Exec1: we'll sell lots of really good stuff at good prices

Exec2: that doesn't sound at all evil. We're a big company, we're supposed to be evil

Founder1: we are going to have the most inadequate, cramped, badly designed parking lots in the fucking world

Founder2: ok that works

Oh yeah and it’s not a fucking war zone.

not smart enough to understand the legal issues here but it appears that america is not beating the “everything is secretly about driving and parking” allegations
tonyjordan.bsky.social
Agreed. And the problem is still entirely that the cars take up too much space. So if this is something you don’t like, you should demand less space for cars.
tonyjordan.bsky.social
Still seems to me that the number one issue here is cars (and the space they take up) and I’m a big fan of never making my opponent’s argument for them.

My unpopular urbanist opinion is that big, hyperfast two-wheelers are a menace and should be banned from bike lanes/paths (with enforcement).

These things endanger everyone riding a bike or legal e-bike. Worse, they deter some from even trying.
E-bikes have evolved into e-motorcycles. Law enforcement is lagging behind.
Serious injuries are on the rise in emergency rooms around the country, as electric cycles become bigger and faster. Lawmakers and police departments are scrambling to address the problem.

It’s the cars that gotta give (space). The road needs to be safe enough for that cargo bike becuase it’s still 1000x better than a car.
tonyjordan.bsky.social
Yup. Keep the eyes on the prize. Cars fucking suck.

tonyjordan.bsky.social
Ok, and so how does that figure into this? I haven't heard that as a reason for the housing crisis.
tonyjordan.bsky.social
I don't understand the question.
tonyjordan.bsky.social
This is not an anecdotal or local thing I am talking about. This is a systemic problem and it's complex. I'm not saying the only reason SF doesn't have housing is parking, although parking concerns are a major source of NIMBY grievance, which is a big part of the SF crisis.
tonyjordan.bsky.social
Agreed. And I appreciate your engagement in this thread!
tonyjordan.bsky.social
Where people live is also a choice. I definitely understand. We have a housing crisis in most of our major cities. As my other posts imply, I think a lot of that housing crisis has to do with car dependency.

Part of my staff can’t live by work is because we build garages instead of housing.

In the case of employees, I would say employer should offer a cash base transportation, benefit, and charge for parking so if the employee wants to drive, they can spend their transportation benefit on parking.
