When Mayor-elect Mamdani takes office on January 1, he will control over 6,300 miles of streets throughout the five boroughs.

Reducing car dependence is one of the best ways to reduce costs for New Yorkers. Owning a car costs nearly $9,000 annually, while taking transit costs just $1,500.

"In contrast, the new committee has no Republicans and a number of transit, bike and pedestrian-friendly voices...

In fact, as Transportation Alternatives noted, in total 60.8 percent of the constituents represented on the committee are in car-free households."

Congratulations to Emily Jabbour, who was just sworn in as the mayor of Hoboken, New Jersey!

Our neighboring city across the Hudson is a Vision Zero success story, having gone nine years without a traffic death.

We're excited for Mayor Jabbour to lead!

Looking at the members of the City Council's Transportation Committee, 60.8% of their constituents' households are car-free!

We're a city of public transit riders. It's great to see a committee that reflects the way the majority of New Yorkers get around!

"'At the very moment the city is committing to safer, more ambitious street transformations on major corridors, allowing motor vehicles back onto streets within public parks moves in the opposite direction'"
Conservative politicians and complaining drivers harangued Mayor Adams into allowing cars back inside parts of Forest Park in Queens and Silver Lake Park on Staten Island for the first time in five years. Mayor Mamdani can — and must — reverse these decisions, advocates say.
Mamdani Must Reverse Adams Putting Cars on Park Roads: Advocates - Streetsblog New York City
Mayor Mamdani should remove cars from two roads inside New York City parks where then-Mayor Eric Adams opened the gates to motorists.

"In the span of a year, the Bedford Avenue bike lane produced a nearly 60-percent increase in cycling traffic along its route, far exceeding typical year-over-year growth."
The (mostly) protected bike lane on Brooklyn's Bedford Avenue attracted nearly 60 percent more cyclists in the year since its debut, proving the hypothesis that if safer lanes are built, cyclists will use them.

Let's get the 34th Street Busway moving!

Slow buses mean wasted time for working New Yorkers. You shouldn’t have to be late to work, or have to spend more time apart from your family, because of unnecessary traffic that messes up your commute.

Congestion pricing is making our streets safer.

For the one-year anniversary of the program, Families for Safe Streets member Kate Brockwehl went on News12 to talk about her crash injury, and how to prevent more crashes in the future: "fewer car trips equals fewer crashes."

"There are also some 12,000 free car storage spots in the neighborhood alone"
Once more, an unelected community board elevated the needs of the Upper West Side's minority of car owners were elevated above street safety concerns.

The sad truth: 75% of drivers with suspended licenses drive anyway. Taking away the licenses of reckless drivers isn't enough to save lives. We need to physically slow down their cars by installing a speed-limiting device.

That's what the Stop Super Speeders bill does.
Unlicensed drivers killed nearly 300 pedestrians, cyclists and motorists on city streets between 2021-2024 — and their percentage share of the carnage soared in the aftermath of the coronavirus pandemic, new city data analyzed by Streetsblog shows.

Fun fact: there have been double bus lanes on Madison Avenue between 42nd and 60th Streets since 1981. Yesterday’s announcement extends the second lane from 42nd down to 23rd. A common-sense completion of a busy bus corridor, and long overdue!

Citi Bike’s runaway price increases are making bike share too expensive for New Yorkers. The solution: subsidize Citi Bike to make rides more affordable.

At a press conference this past week, Mayor Mamdani alluded to “the City’s relationship with Citi Bike” 👀

Nine years ago today — January 9, 2017 — was the last time Hoboken had a traffic death.

Universal daylighting works. New Yorkers deserve the same protections as our neighbors across the Hudson River. Hundreds of New Yorkers die in preventable crashes every year. That has to end.

Red light cameras save lives — and expanding this critical program will make streets and intersections safer.
