something that I've noticed about the right wing claim that woke people always say we should throw out all historical figures that weren't perfect instead of judging them by "the standards of their time" is that these same people very frequently make historical figures sound worse than they were!

this is very important, but not as important as making sure we never have a terminally online administration again

Hey, if you're thinking about subscribing to my new efforts at Ghost, this is the week I need you to do it.

The doors are open and the Ghost era is beginning. If you were reluctant because of Substack, please show me I made the right choice by moving.

The @chicago.suntimes.com photographer who risked their personal health and safety to take this photograph is Anthony Vazquez. Please credit photographers and media outlets. In this age of misinformation, a photo with no context could be anything at all.

Every punk band got that one bassist who looks like the first zombie in NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD
The guy, kind of a long angular face and beak of a nose and raggedy teeth

the way you know this is bullshit is that it got laundered through a STEM publication. i was just at a talk with major vfx supervisors knocking down generative ai in film and tv for a whole host of technical and artistic issues it can’t resolve.

we’ll see how his mayoral tenure shakes out but i am convinced that Mamdani has the juice. not just the charisma to win an election but the temperament to govern and the measured pragmatism of someone who genuinely believes what they’re saying and wants to accomplish real things.

as a translator by trade, i agree in principle, but boy is it a way to sort the skilled translators from the ham-fisted ones, because it's an extremely fine line between "playful modern interpretation" and "cringe borderlands-ass tire fire"

Dude I’m calling it, Thiel is cooked. He accidentally dropped a Tangible Detail. Most people didn’t know he existed and now he’s The Billionaire Who Thinks That One Piece Is Jesus.

thiel, man, what the fuck are you talking about

He describes the plot of Watchmen, a 1986 graphic novel involving superheroes grappling with moral questions about humanity against the backdrop of impending nuclear war:

The antihero Ozymandias, the antichrist-type figure, is sort of an early-modern person. He believes this will be a timeless and eternal solution – eternal world peace. Moore is sort of a late-modern. In early modernity, you have ideal solutions, ‘perfect’ solutions to calculus. In late modernity, things are sort of probabilistic. And at some point, he asks Dr Manhattan whether the world government is going to last. And he says that ‘nothing lasts forever.’ So you embrace the antichrist and it still doesn’t work.

Thiel later finds biblical meaning in the manga One Piece, discussing how he believes it represents a future where an antichrist-like one-world government has repressed science. He believes that the hero, Monkey D Luffy, represents a Christlike figure.

In One Piece, you are set in a fantasy world, again sort of an alternate earth, but it’s 800 years into the reign of this one-world state. Which, as the story unfolds, gradually gets darker and darker. You sort of realize, in my interpretation, who runs the world and it’s something like the antichrist. There’s Luffy, a pirate who wears a red straw hat, sort of like Christ’s crown of thorns. And then towards the end of the story, transforms into a figure who resembles Christ in Revelation.

Thiel, along with a researcher and writer at Thiel Capital, explored these ideas at greater length in an essay for the religious journal First Things earlier this month.

The new trailer for THE RUNNING MAN is up. My IT guy will post it. I don't "get" posting on Bluesky. That's okay. I've seen the movie, and it's a balls-to-the-wall thrill ride. The feel is like a modern-day DIE HARD.

This week’s main story is about Paramount’s decision to name Bari Weiss Editor-in-Chief of CBS News, the future of U.S. journalism, and why we think she shouldn’t describe her endeavors as “punk.” Bari, look at us: You are not punk. Joe Strummer would’ve hated your fancy Substack, Bari!
