Hey guys. This is important. My friend needs to pay 30% of her surgery costs up front or they're canceling the procedure. Her husband's income is affected by the government shutdown. I know we're all strapped but can I get a share? Donations would be a huge help.

Book and bath time. Nothing says "soothe your nerves" like digging into a big chunky horror from @martinshannon.bsky.social

Gotta get up at 6am to take Murky for his surgery in the morning and will be an anxious mess until he gets out so if I'm on here posting weird shit at ungodly hours you'll know why.

When we write or draw porn or erotica, we get banned from having a bank account and our livelihoods get seized even if we give it away for free.

When billionaires steal what we've written or drawn to churn out a slop-approximate of porn, they're allowed to charge for it.

Oh good, ChatGPT is getting "erotica for verified adults" later this year
We made ChatGPT pretty restrictive to make sure we were being careful with mental health issues. We realize this made it less useful/enjoyable to many users who had no mental health problems, but given the seriousness of the issue we wanted to get this right.

Now that we have been able to mitigate the serious mental health issues and have new tools, we are going to be able to safely relax the restrictions in most cases.

In a few weeks, we plan to put out a new version of ChatGPT that allows people to have a personality that behaves more like what people liked about 4o (we hope it will be better!). If you want your ChatGPT to respond in a very human-like way, or use a ton of emoji, or act like a friend, ChatGPT should do it (but only if you want it, not because we are usage-maxxing).

In December, as we roll out age-gating more fully and as part of our “treat adult users like adults” principle, we will allow even more, like erotica for verified adults.

Unless and until some kind of compelling legal and moral argument is presented as to why this is a legitimate use of deadly force, this is just…mass murder.

We are actually in an era where the government is utilizing it's power to censor people and punish them for their speech, and yet it feels like the free speech cries from the 2010s when people were just mad about being called out on twitter were way louder than the cries now.

Do I have any journalist friends in Georgia? I've got a tip on a pretty horrifying way a friend has been treated (or not treated) by Emory hospital and I think it's time to get the media involved because they are not responding to the established channels for patient advocacy.

Here's my pitch: you back a Brinks truck to John Carpenter's house and he makes a legacy sequel to THEY LIVE where we willingly put the aliens back in charge. Like we know they're aliens. They're still here. They're trying to kill and enslave us. We all have glasses. And we reelected them anyway.

Oh wait, this is the one: The widespread normalization of hostility toward "spoilers" is detrimental to artists, audiences, criticism, and human relationships. Calm the fuck down and let people talk about how a book ends.

books should have an anti-acknowledgements section where the author talks shit about all the people who fucked them over while they were trying to write the thing. not bc I personally want to write one but bc I love gossip

I think I'm gonna blurb my next book with the advice my mom gave me when I was 14: "Don't let anybody read this. They'll think there's something wrong with you."

My book is coming out in January. if you're interested in pitching a review of it or an interview with me, I'd be delighted and grateful 🥺 it's speculative short stories. There's monsters, outer space, and pie!

Why has Dominion Voting Systems been settling defamation lawsuits with Trump allies who falsely claimed the company stole the 2020 election?

Because Dominion has just been bought by a company run by a former GOP election official.

Be warned.

Anyway I'm proud of "Thoughts and Prayers" and every story in this collection but I understand this book is not gonna be for everybody. I'm ok with that. The great thing about horror is it's a big tent, there's room for everybody.
tlbodine.bsky.social
And I think that's what people respond to the most. I think we are accustomed to seeing violence a certain way in fiction, and by refusing to glorify it at all, just having it be this flat, cold, sudden intrusion into these kid's lives, it hits like a freight train.
tlbodine.bsky.social
And no kids die on-screen. The only visible murder is an adult, and it's described in such a way as to feel surreal and almost mundane, but shocking in its mundanity. At every turn, I wanted to write something the opposite of sensationalism. I wanted to capture real horror.
tlbodine.bsky.social
The shooter doesn't even have a face. I don't describe him or the gun or his motive or anything. It doesn't matter. It's irrelevant. He is irrelevant, a faceless extension of this bigger looming evil (that is also faceless and inhuman)
tlbodine.bsky.social
75% of the story is just capturing moments of these kids, letting them live and breathe and be human. They get described in specific details. They have dreams and flaws and hopes and opinions and make edgy jokes and get scared in ways that come out as anger.
tlbodine.bsky.social
But about "Thoughts and Prayers", my school shooting story. I wanna talk about this for a sec because it's important. That story *is* confrontational, I don't pull any punches to make adults comfortable. But I treated it with care in really specific, purposeful ways.
tlbodine.bsky.social
I even avoided reading the story about brood parasites invading the womb and being born as giant, monstrous infants that get bigger and bigger but never grow up! I practiced so much restraint!
tlbodine.bsky.social
I will say this. As much as These Kids is a book full of kids in peril, it's on their side. Overwhelmingly this book is very pro-kid. I just want to put that out there.
