Like, it's so bad and so discriminatory that it feels like a policy that would be struck down in a court somewhere after years of doing untold harm, incredible work here by this government

This is gonna be the meth-house testing racket all over again
Me so old, I remember sitting in Nandor Tanczos' Parliamentary office discussing the saliva tests available at the time and their false positive rates. From memory, a shittonne of these saliva tests were made by a fundamentalist Corporate Christian backing.

I've seen protecting kids used as an excuse to demonise; Muslims, trans and queer folks, cycle lanes for some reason, sexual and relationships education, healthcare provision, informed consent and each time it comes from people who want to exercise weird control of their kids or hate minorities.

My dad will have been dead for two months tomorrow morning. I would love to talk to him forever. I can't. And a fucking glorified LLM-fueled chatbot can't change that, but it can be a freakish abomination in the eyes of God and men, preying on the grief stricken to give them shit and call it gold.

I’d thought we may be able to sunset the RSS feeds on the NZ Legislation website, and replace with an API. Nope! There was a lot we learned from current users, but most compelling for me personally was the value ascribed to anonymous notifications to changes in the law.

One big effect of AI hype and promotion of unreliable chatbots is that a significant amount of additional friction and labour is being injected into our knowledge-making and -maintaining systems. At a time when these systems are already contracting and being starved by growing austerity.
Folks might not know a lot of people are getting *very* upset that the materials they request are not available in the libraries/archives they're requesting from.

We're getting lots here at the Library of Virginia: requests of documents likely surfaced by large language models that *do not exist*.
I wish a notice like this wasn't necessary.

Principals spending their wellbeing allowance shouldn't be news. This is a further attack on schools. Suss that Peggy Burrows specifically named. What are MPs spending? #nzpol

Schools rapped for spending on gym memberships, yoga classes and overseas travel
The principal of a Christchurch school is defending an $18,500 trip to Queenstown for its senior leadership team, one of scores questioned by the Office of the Auditor-General for their spending.

I remain adamant that rare wine fraud is the most pro-social, most economically productive, most just, and most hilarious crime that exists. The prison sentence for anyone convicted of it should be two weeks in a resort and extra training to help them do it better.

Exactly right
Every single person who is anti-trans is a slight scratch away from going full racist. It is basically a gateway drug for racism/bigotry.

It seems fine. You pretend it’s about protecting women. You can point to famous people on your side.

But it is only ever about hate. Disgusting & cruel hatred.
UK Labour is what happens when a party flushes its soul down the toilet.

A party of bigots.

Yeah, this is a real thing.
I spend so much time verifying everything now from art to cited sources to photos to historical references to citations to quotes to legal and medical information that it's really hard to fathom how much work AI has collectively added to the world, not reduced
Here's the reality this example illustrates:

It's not even just about people blindly trusting what ChatGPT tells them. LLMs are poisoning the entire information ecosystem. You can't even necessarily trust that the citations in a published paper are real (or a search engine's descriptions of them).

Yeah that's a solid "nah" from me too. Fund schools better. Fund more teacher aides. Give EVERY kid an education plan which supports them to learn and thrive! This is an excuse to keep underfunding the public education system by segregating autistic kids and it sucks.
This is what I expected from the government, but it's incredibly disappointing that Autism New Zealand should go along with it. We need to make "regular" schools cater to neurodivergent students — which will benefit everyone! — not segregate difference.

This. Targeting trans youth is a test of how far they can push. If the coalition is re-elected, expect more restrictions. Note which parties are speaking out now and making official statements - they’re the ones likely to resist further erosion, and should be voted for strongly when the times comes.
Important 🧵
Attempts to constrain gender affirming health care are an attack on bodily autonomy and a politicisation of access to health care. It signals a willingness to constrain and control people's choices that every single one of us ought to be resisting, as vigorously as we can.
One of the things cis women have long fought for bodily autonomy with are cries such as "get your laws off my body" & "my body, my choice" ... trans folks are no different.

This is why the ban on puberty blockers for trans folks is so incredibly stupid and ideological.

We need a wealth tax, not just to be able to fund infrastructure and public services, but also because very rich people are a threat to democracy. And I don't just mean billionaires, who should not exist at all.
