We have a new org that does! streetspacnj.org#endorsements

And also we're having a mayoral forum exclusively about transportation issues on Monday, Oct. 27

In Hudson County we received SS4A funds which created NJ's first County Vision Zero Implementation Plan. Our densely populated cities were not meant for 300 kids to be dropped off via car, most kids live within a 10 minute walk of their school, but cannot traverse the streets safely. Let's do better
warrenjwells.bsky.social
Thanks in large part to Safe Routes to School (a program created in Marin before it was rolled out nationwide), Marin County sees 3x the rate of kids walking or rolling to school.

Over the past 15 years we've gone from 1 in 4 kids to 1 in 3 kids. This compares to 1 in 9(!) nationally.

And another one! NYDOT is starting to see the light. We need to repair highways, not widen them, highways cost $$$$. We can put all that money into better solutions; first class buses and trains, smarter freight, connect our cities and towns, and reduce driving dependency statewide.

NEW: A controversial highway expansion in the Hudson Valley has been delayed after pushback from transportation planners and environmentalists.

Last year, New York Focus reported that the project would cost the state at least $1.3 billion and save drivers just one to six minutes.
Hochul Hits Pause on Hudson Valley Highway Expansion
Reporting from New York Focus last year found that the project would save drivers six minutes max, at a cost of $1.3 billion.

Huge news! Congrats to the advocates who managed to put together an amazing community led coalition, and the elected's who stood by their side. Now NJ DOT needs to do the same and cancel the massive turnpike expansion. Please spare us the pollution, home devaluations, asphalt, and increase in cars.

“The transformation is astonishing. [Paris] has quietly—& quickly—become one of the most bike-friendly cities in the world. What started as a series of emergency “coronapistes” or pop-up bike lanes, built during the pandemic has evolved into a permanent bike network spanning hundreds of kilometres.”
New Study Shows How Paris Pedaled Its Way to a Cycling Revolution
Cycling through central Paris meant weaving between buses and scooters—a bold choice reserved for the fearless few.

This is a lot of deaths caused by cars in two years. Thanks to this group for raising awareness of this issue. Cars are destroying our cities. I'm not anti-car, but we need BIG not incremental changes to make our cities safe again. Like new regulations, new street designs, and accountability.

Our San Diego chapter is working to place 146 memorial signs around the city -- one for every person killed in the last 2 years. You can help by donating!
$15 covers a sign. Link below.

“You can’t tell me a parking space at the corner of a street is worth a life.”

Advocates are in front of the district office of @galeabrewer.bsky.social this morning to ask her why she changed her mind and no longer supports universal daylighting in NYC.
A group of people gathered on the sidewalk in front Council Member Gale Brewer’s district office. A group of people gathered on the sidewalk in front Council Member Gale Brewer’s district office. “In London cyclists now outnumber cars in the City by 2 to 1. Paris, where they now outnumber motorists across the whole city, is catching up with Europe’s traditional bike capitals, Amsterdam & Copenhagen…In Copenhagen, bikes account for almost half of commuter trips to work/school.” @economist.com

I'm proud to be endorsed by Streets PAC NJ! For years I have stood with transit & complete streets advocates. On the City Council, I’ll be ready to deliver the next wave of downtown #JerseyCity infrastructure successes—making our streets safer for all and improving our mass transit options.

If Solomon is bad on streets, no one in NJ is good. No Ward or Ward equivalent in NJ has seen more progress on safe streets in the last 8 years.

This is a huge case of Streetsblog Gets Action, but this is also thanks to the environmental and neighborhood activists in the area around Starlight Park who, against all odds, organized to kick the state DOT's teeth in. So congratulations to them for a very impressive win

When newly-elected Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson started converting car lanes to bike lanes in 2009, pundits claimed it was political suicide. In 2018, he stepped down after three terms as the longest-serving mayor in the city's history. So what can this tale teach us about so-called "bikelash"?🧵

My mother recently moved to Jersey City from the burbs. She likes it way more than she thought she would. Walking more, likes that she doesn't have to drive on highways, finding a lot of community and neighborhood activity.
talyaschwartz.bsky.social
This is perfect for a city like Jersey City. If we could make our neighborhoods truly safe for pedestrians and cyclists, we wouldn't need to rely on cars so much. Imagine getting to school or to the PATH station or to the bus this comfortably!

Look how wonderful Low Traffic Neighborhoods can be!

This is the Van Gogh Walk in Lambeth, London. This street is decades old but built for people first yet still has access for last block travel & emergency vehicles! @openplans.org @nyc.streetsblog.org @thewaroncars.bsky.social @nycdot.bsky.social

I'm not saying that e-bikes aren't a growing safety concern, but 2023 saw over 3,000 teenagers die plus another 200,000+ teenagers injured due to car crashes... and this problem has been around since before Rick Reilly was even born
talyaschwartz.bsky.social
In NJ when a driver injures or kills someone "by accident" - there is usually no consequence, or sometimes just like a traffic citation. Do insurance and state laws create the impression that individual actions and judgement are only about protecting themselves? How can we change this?
talyaschwartz.bsky.social
Red states already do what he wants, all he needs is to hurt blue states enough so they do the same. Hard to imagine red states abandoning trump even with economic woes.

Another example of ill-considered restrictions on e-bikes that makes no sense and will not protect anybody from anything. Unfortunately, we can probably expect more of this in the coming weeks and months in New Jersey, after the State Senate President declared war on e-bikes yesterday.

this is actually extraordinary and a lot of it's been done just by asking people to drive basically any car produced since 2007. almost no cars later than that (and some earlier) comply with ULEZ - it's not forcing everyone into a Tesla, it's incredibly basic improvements

For the first time ever, London has met legal limits for nitrogen dioxide.

When I became Mayor, we were told it would take 193 years. We did it 184 years earlier than expected.

Cleaner air means a healthier city and big savings for the NHS.
