Writing Christmas cards with a notable name missing for the first time is absolutely devastating. I'm going to hold this grief close and use the emotions it brings me to make sure I reach out to those I've still got.

My friend had to go to the UK to do a course on book preservation/binding and I notice Sprang isn't on the list, but maybe lots of people are doing Sprang!

I'm 100% in favor of paywalls you gotta pay for your news you gotta pay the workers but I think some stories should not be paywalled and I feel like things like food recalls or imminent nuclear strikes absolutely should be free

Another wild pic of the sunset tonight down at the beach.
December 4, 2025 at 10:17 AM
Having a crappy few days, it's lovely to pop down to the beach after a hot day. The cool change arrived & was Chilly🥶 so no swimming, but bloody worth it to see the sunset. The colours were wild!

I’ve sometimes fallen into the trap of thinking that complementing a creative person for their work is less sophisticated or desired than discussion or debate about it but very often the best thing you can say to them is hell yeah and that doesn’t make you dumb it just makes you nice

Why has the State Library given over building space & marketing messages to 'entrepreneurs' using it to lobby for their own for-profit private business funding, from inside our premier public Library? What on earth does this have to do with the core functions of a State Library now in crisis?

When we were kids, my brother and I would ‘perform’ our version of this to our family. He’d do the low voice and I’d do the high. We’d both fall over at the end.
He passed away a few weeks ago but seeing this clip takes me right back there. Rest in peace, big guy x

Heads up to choristers and carol lovers Chris Addison is doing his Bluesky Advent Calendar of gorgeous Christmas Carols.
Happy Advent to you and your kin! And everyone else's kin too, come to that. As every December so far this decade, I'm going to do an Advent Calendar of beautiful and brilliant carols, with each day's added to a YouTube playlist and also to the ongoing Spotify one, now in its sixth(!) year.

Why I'm banging on about the State Library fiasco: people who know how bad it is are forbidden to speak out; scared of political reprisals or for their jobs or prospects. I'm a cross, menopausal freelancer who won't be invited to any schmoozy money-drinks & as such can go orf like a Catherine Wheel.

One more thing for World AIDS day. A short video about the quilt panel I made for Alvin Ailey that became part of a retrospective of his life at the Whitney museum. We lost so many artists ❤️‍🩹. It was an honor to be part of, and this tells the story.
