both are true

tons of people use + will continue to use it
AND
the effect it is having on the people who don't understand how or why it is having an effect on them will become a huge part of politics

it's not that hard people
this is a bluesky bubble opinion. 800M+ people use chatgpt every week. I hate Facebook and Instagram and I wish they didn’t exist, but 3B and 2B people use them every month, respectively. it’s very hard to picture a mass or even a niche left backlash against them
i think tech and ai positive people are going to be in for a big shock when anti tech and anti ai sentiment becomes a major part of leftwing politics going forward especially as datacenters continue to destroy communities and raise electricity bills

So after listening to multiple talks by philosophers of mind who defend consciousness as the substrate of the entire universe, and physicists who invoke quantum mechanics as the source of consciousness, the conclusion is clear: they have no idea about neuroscience, nor any interest to know about it.

A new special issue of Philosophical Transactions B takes on one of science’s biggest questions: how life begins.

Rather than retracing Earth’s history, the authors look for the universal conditions that could make life possible anywhere, approaching the question from many fields and angles.
How life begins and where it might happen again
A recent special issue of Philosophical Transactions B takes on one of the biggest mysteries in science: how life first began. Instead of trying to replay Earth’s exact history, the issue’s authors lo...

I found this a really illuminating thread on what demonstrations do and why they matter.
In social movement studies, we talk about how marches and protests expand the threshold of acceptable risk so that people take more and bigger social risks IN PUBLIC, EN MASSE. This is extremely important for the bourgeois white folks holding signs and building social rapport.
Not a shitpost: #NoKings is feel-good performative activism for comfortable mostly upper and upper middle class white folks and that’s good, actually. Millions of people in the streets protesting a fascist regime is good. It is good for the normie baseline to be massive displays of public dissent.

I think Faine is right

the responses to the initial comments on all the white house posts seem well-planted, as do the initial comments themselves

you win the information game by playing a different game
I suspect the MAGA government decided to launch all these Bluesky accounts tonight to try to bait people in advance of No Kings.

These people have incurable 4chan brain and this is how they operate.

Block them. Do not engage. Do not give them what they want.

expanding on this

the single thing that frustrates me the most about modern app tech is if it doesn't work on a user's phone without an internet connection

I should not have to always use the internet to access data I want to manage locally
I keep thinking about how powerful our phones have gotten and how almost all of that power is used to process cloud-hosted UIs instead of processing anything locally
correct

i’ve been saying this for a couple months. RL is driving towards specialization

my hunch is it’s temporary and something will shift again back towards generalization, but for now.. buckle up!

I agree but also think that defying the sort of thinking steadily programmed into civic society by algorithms that thrive off of outrage might have something to do with why not that many people realize it's an option

we think using algorithms. when we learn to think with bad tools, we think badly.
I swear to fucking god the exceptionally shitty loss of nuance is not something you can blame 100 percent on the UX of social media, you still have a fucking option to not be an asshole

the fact that blocking a user hides their reply for everyone, not just the user who blocked them, seems like an extremely toxic pattern for collective sense-making.

1. user makes [xyz claim]
2. another user corrects them
3. blocked, hidden

it should be explicitly shown as hidden instead
