I'm putting dog medicine all over my hands to make them rough and gnarled. My callous-crusted mitts are flipping burgers on the grill without utensils and digging a bomb shelter like a mole. I'm building a home for my beautiful white American family - a deep hole in the earth dug by unfeeling hands.

Hillary Clinton never visited Wisconsin during her campaign.

I've always heard jokes about Reagan destroying Mondale and I only learned last year (because I am not a political scientist and the way all this shit gets talked about is extremely irritating) that his running mate was a woman, and I simply do not believe that was NOT a huge factor in that sweep.

They avoid discussing something interesting after making this point of AOC being -15 net favorability compared to Bernie, by avoiding talking about AOC at all while talking about 2 Presidential elections where women lost. It's begging followup about misogyny, but they only talk about authenticity.

Jared: You’ll notice that a guy like Dan Osborn or Graham Platner — they’re not going out there and promoting the suite of trillions and trillions of dollars of the progressive wish list. They’re doing some of that —

Klein: They’re not Green New Deal candidates.

Jared: Absolutely not.

Klein: Which is to say nothing against the Green New Deal. But that gets to something else interesting that I’ve been thinking about a bit. It’s pretty clear that in 2028, if A.O.C. runs, which I think she’s certainly considering, she’s very likely to inherit the Bernie Sanders lane.

Jared: Yes.

Klein: And if you look at Sanders and A.O.C. polling, they look actually quite different. Sanders’s last poll I saw was something like +11 in his net favorabilities, and A.O.C. was –4 or –5. So they have a 15-point-ish gap between them. And their policies are not very different at this point. They’re very unified. They’re doing the anti-oligarchy tour together.

But what they have come to represent in American politics — Bernie Sanders with his mittens, A.O.C. at the Met Gala — reads very differently, completely separate from how unified they are on issues.

The main demographic groups Trump really did make significant in-roads with in 2024 is Black men and Hispanic voters. There's probably two very specific stories there but I don't think it's the one Klein and Jared are selling. You can see among Latinx voters Kerry's +10 overall comparable to Harris.

Read this characterization and then look at the chart in my first post again. Does Trump, let alone Republicans, really deserve credit for "a multiracial working-class coalition"?Here's numbers on white non-college-educated voters, is he making gains here?

Jared: That really touched a chord. And it set off dealignment to a much greater extent in 2016, starting with primarily white working-class folks. But then it moved toward Latinos and some Black men in 2020, and then to a much greater extent — roughly half of Latinos voted for Trump in 2024 and a quarter of African American men.

So now this is a multiracial movement away from the Democratic —

Klein: Multiracial working-class coalition — the thing Democrats wanted to build.

Jared: [Laughs.] Exactly. The hugely ironic aspect of this is that the Republicans now have that multiracial working-class coalition that the Democrats promised was their permanent majority.

Klein: I want to push on a couple of pieces of this story that I always think are complicated.

Klein: So politics is always a choice. Democrats didn’t just lose working-class voters — they went somewhere, right?

Jared: For sure.

Klein: They went to Republicans.

Pundits might say it's elitist to think this way, but losing a few percentage points with poor, uneducated people is because poor people can less afford ideological red lines and uneducated people are less able to untangle the propaganda saturating our horrible fake news media landscape.

It doesn’t matter if you define the working class by income, by education or both — Democrats have been losing ground among these voters for years now. In 2024, Donald Trump won both voters making less than $50,000 a year and voters without a college degree. And the way Trump won these voters wasn’t just to rack up a giant majority among the white working class.

The latest Ezra Klein ragebait and frankly a lot of discussion around it is stupid. 20% of voters changed position in 2024. Harris lost a few points, after years of significant inflation while Democrats almost universally lied that "the economy is doing great". That's not some big ideological shift.

it shows the makeup of Trump's coalition in 2024 being 8% less white - 1% more Black, 3% more Hispanic, 2% more Other. The makeup of Harris's coalition was 3% more White, 3 percent less Black, and 2% more Other.

my niche ethical opinion is being opposed to this entire metaphysical conception of cars. every car that breaks 60mph or costs more than the average yearly GDP should be as hated. i am fighting for the souls of the hoes.
