I work at @freedom.press. I'm told it's some sort of holiday for donating to nonprofits.

My team supports journalists with digital security for themselves and sources. In 2025, I really do think this matters more than ever. If this is something you care about, support our work. freedom.press/donate

I saw a meme last night about a generational divide marker of folks who cannot sit through videos and want the words typed out because they read faster than they can watch a video and I felt that deep in my heart. I'm happy for folks who love video, but I hate them. Give me text. Let me read.

okay you know what I will yell about this. it’s 7:15am ET and I have eight Giving Tuesday emails so far, not counting the ones orgs sent on Sunday, or physical mail. orgs are fighting for scraps of attention and if they don’t their boards will get angry FOMO.
feeling my annual Giving Tuesday Nonprofit Professional Saltiness and instead of yelling about this fake problem I will instead say, if you have GT overwhelm: you will not go wrong if you pick one local org to give to, give to their general fund, and make it recurring. add more when you're ready.

The other point implicitly made by the chart is that defining inflation as the change in prices over the past year is an arbitrary convention we economists use for analytic convenience. If people in their own lives find the change over two or three years more salient, they’re not wrong or confused.

Earlier this year, we documented nearly 50 incidents of immigration officers shattering car windows to make arrests — a tactic experts say was rarely used before Trump took office.

ICE claims its officers use a “minimum amount of force.”

You can judge for yourself.

It’s really designed to give you some of the pleasures of just kind of looking through stuff, which I think people appreciate in a world of so many 1-2-3 lists. And the fact that it’s designed around covers comes from the same thing. Love or hate covers, that’s the browsing experience. (3/)

I am convinced that one reason why NPR’s Books We Love has been so successful is that while it allows you to filter in a bunch of ways, it also emulates elements of browsing. In its regular cover mode, it’s not a list, it’s an array, and when you refresh the page, it shuffles. (1/)
The death of browsing is part of the reason art is the way it is now. Our opinions are largely fed to us by algorithms. Spending a spare 15 minutes wandering around a bookstore or comic shop or video rental place was how you found stuff you wouldn't ordinarily pick up and thereby expanded your taste
Bookselling is like the most "people go to the store and buy what looks cool to them without a particular agenda" type business left, and your purchases have a huge influence on what is ordered, what is displayed, and what is recommended.
