I bought some sheet music off Nextdoor today and the past is such a distant place. What's a talking machine?

Every biologist knows the story of Fleming's chance discovery of penicillin. But is it true?

Here, with @asimovpress.bsky.social, I write about inconsistencies in the canonical story, and explore a few alternative theories about what really happened in that St. Mary's lab in the summer of 1928.
The Penicillin Myth
Competing theories seek to explain inconsistencies surrounding Alexander Fleming’s famed discovery.

every time there's an issue at the data center, they light a big flare so all the traffic on the internet superhighway will avoid it. putting out all these fires is why data centers use so much more water nowadays.

For South San Francisco people, there's a workshop at the library next Thurs (Oct 30) from 6:30-8:30 PM about redesigning ECR. A good opportunity to make it safe for bikes and walking: fp.mysocialpinpoint.com/el-camino-re...

I was playing with ollama and open 4b models (Qwen3 & Gemma) on my laptop and they're indistinguishable from the state-of-the-art models to me. I don't think that means data centers are obsolete (most people don't run their own compute), but there's going to be a limited need to keep building.
I continue to think that while "LLMs aren't actually that world-changing" is a risk people have at least started paying attention to, "good-enough LLMs are going to be cheap and ubiquitous and those $1B data centers are going to become a liability rather than a moat" is an equally serious problem

Have some respect for yourself and hold your nostalgia to a higher standard.
This is doing numbers on social media right now and it's so depressing how people truly yearn for this shit and want to preserve that feeling indefinitely like a mausoleum of false memories.

Heads up: ignore samtools dot org, similarly minimap2 dot com and likely others. It's owned by a known phishing site and while the binaries they offer look valid currently (but note they may be serving us different binaries to others), that could change.

Ie: it's not us (Samtools team)! Be warned
