Honest to God, sometimes the stupid things these people say make me want to take over their messaging. I think they're evil and wrong about everything, but the unforced communication errors are absurd and offensive not just morally, but logically.

No loss there, Frankenstein is fantastic and Mary Shelley is badass.

I am irrationally angry thinking about how there's a similar character from a similar and Much Better film that did about 2x the box office from a studio whose rise during that decade is a bigger deal.

I'm so sad I never saw D'Angelo live.

I had an opportunity once but I passed on it, God knows why.

Music is life. Live music is a powerful infusion of everything that makes life worth living.

Go to the damn show.

I still don't understand what I'm looking at. The 2nd hand cringe is painful — "Suck It Lane"?!

For kids who grew up lonely for any reason, books often provide their first experience of safety and belonging

Worth it. Sometimes JJ is intentionally off-putting or confusing, but that's part of the adventure of trying to do something different with the novel form and the English language, and I'm here for that ride. YMMV. You could say similar things about Gravity's Rainbow and I noped out hard on that one

RIP D'Angelo. 😢 Obviously he'll be remembered for his own amazing work, but I immediately thought of this haunting cover with Princess.

(sorry this is a Facebook link but it's hard to find)

Oh shit no. He was certainly this century's soul visionary. I remember the first time I heard "Untitled (How Does It Feel)" and nearly had to pull over the car. Black Messiah is def God Tier. He should have had the opportunity to make a lot more music. 😪

I am spending precious sleep time scrolling, which I will correct in a moment, but I have to say that your nighttime posts are always so gentle and soothing. Somehow they create a lovely space for reflection, even here. I can imagine you must be extremely good at your work.

If anyone needs me I will be in the museum, lying down next to the bog bodies.
Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?
2? Questions
I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

Writers should have to apply yearly for a license to satire. Only 10 licenses will be given each year, by a committee made up of Fran Lebowitz, Jordan Peele, Armando Ianucchi, and me with a Ouija board connection to Jonathan Swift.

After his death in TA 3019, Saruman the White was resurrected. Less evil, but still seeking power through (a) mechanization and (b) the labor of subjugated races, Saruman the Plum became known among men as "Willy Wonka"

Kept busy with cooking and food prep yesterday and these are my reward: gochujang caramel cookies (NYT Cooking, Eric Kim). You only get 8 absolutely giant cookies, but they are Amazing.
A plate of 6 very large sugar cookies with orange-brown patches of gochujang swirl.

yearly reminder to people insisting that we view Christopher Columbus as "a man of his time" that *the people responsible for the Spanish Inquisition* thought Columbus was out of pocket

Christopher Columbus was dragged back to Spain in chains by a crusading knight, convicted of tyranny and immeasurable cruelty, pardoned by Isabella but banned from returning to Hispaniola.

Fuck Columbus.
